Blind Date with a Book and a View to die for

in Market Friday2 years ago (edited)

Is anyone game for a blind date with a book, breathtaking views, thrift shops scattered in quaintly decorated little nooks and crannies, and comfy seating in numerous little spots where you can hide away with your favourite book? There's even a small nursery for plant lovers!

Add to that, friendly smiles from the charming staff who offer excellent service, the best toasted sarmies on the best sourdough bread, the best carrot cake south of the equator, excellent coffee, and a lovely cool breeze from this high vantage point when it's sweltering hot everywhere else, and you have a recipe for success.

So please join me for a shopping spree at Pilgrim's Rest Tea Garden.

What an absolute treat it was finding this hidden gem in the midst of one of our best-loved areas, the Valley of a Thousand Hills, only ten minutes away from my best buddy @artywink's home. They joined us and were just as delighted as they also had not heard of this tranquil gem, so don't be surprised if you're going to get an Artywink post on this very same spot, of course from her vantage point :)

It was pure chance that I discovered this heavenly place when scouring Google maps a while back, looking for something new.
After reading the reviews, I knew we had to come to this special place at the end of Riverview road. It overlooks the massive tranquil Inanda Dam in the Valley of a Thousand Hills, and the local settlement below.
The road was named long before the dam was built along the Umgeni River, which ends some 30 kilometers away at the Blue Lagoon that flows into the Indian Ocean.
Hubby and our friends thought I was leading them up the garden path, or rather on the road to nowhere, all very skeptical!
That was until the road ended and the tea gardens came into view, with the spectacular views of the dam way below!

Pilgrim's Rest Tea Garden is aptly described by the owners as:

A rustic tea garden tucked away in the heart of Crestholme. This is a place of tranquility and peace.

In another post, I will tell you more about this special haven and its outreach programs, or I'll have you reading all day or all night.

Today, we will go shopping and have a bite to eat from their simple menu.
I never thought I'd get excited and go ooh & aah when having toasted Cheese and Tomato Sandwiches; whether it's the secret blend of herbs, but these were really good!

Books, clothing, home decor, paintings, LP's dating back to His Master's Voice; all kinds of knick-knacks, there really was something for everyone, but books were the name of the game as it was everywhere.
It reminds me of my home where every room has a collection of books, even my kitchen, although those are recipe books.

This cosy corner is inside a large white marquee where the people who run the community projects also hold church services.

What a fantastic view looking out into the dam! And all those bits and bobs inside, it's like an aladdins cave. Great find Lizzie!!!

I just wish I could capture the 180° view of the sprawling dam, really breathtaking seeing from that height. Artywink & our hubbies were sceptical, thinking I was taking them on the road to nowhere, but what a treat it was indeed!
Thank you @livinguktaiwan, this was a real find.
Hubby left his cellphone lying on the till counter and the young lady on duty went to great lengths to get hold of us, fortunately knew artywink's grandson. If it was anywhere else, the phone would have been history!

This is so lovely, @lizelle. Now I really want to go there! It's so charming. In my heart of hearts I want to quit my office job and open a shop like that. The idea of having a place that makes people feel at home, and a little better about their day, just by walking into it, is such a happy idea.

You can always follow that dream one day @jayna, it's just to find the right location.
It was just so refreshing finding this little haven of peace, everyone was so warm and friendly, as were the patrons who were regulars.
If only I could have captured that view better to share here with everyone.
Thank you for the visit🤗

Grand view of the dam from there, spot on with your finding this venue!

Tea garden looks inviting as does the ditty little shop with many books on offer. His Masters Voice takes one down memory lane of our parents record collection.

!LUV have a wonderful weekend and thanks for finding another hidden gem.

This little place is worth a long drive Joan, even all the way from your nick of the woods! You'd be able to capture stunning photos of the dam with your camera. They host weddings there as well, likely having one today as they're not open.
Enjoy the cooler weekend, such a blessing!
Thank you for the love and the visit🤗

Very long drive from our side, need to go down the coast once again to visit closer areas, not one for driving these freeways of late!

If they had a wedding today it will be raining, which apparently in old wives tales brings a lot of good fortune to the couple !LOLZ

Loving the cooler weather, have a wonderful weekend as well.

Wow ! What a view !

...and that sandwich is so perfectly toasted and looks devine.

I've been meaning to try to explore the nooks and crannies of my area to see if there are any places I might need to spend a weekend that aren't very far from me. I was going to start exploring before covid, then I couldn't really do it safely I thought... and then the idea died for a while. Maybe when the weather warms a bit more I will think on it again.

Hi Jacey, you definitely need to do that, we always think the grass is always greener on the other side but forget to look for gems just around the corner!
That view is amazing, as I said, my cellphone camera doesn't do it any justice!
You can start researching now so you have a list of potential hideaways just around the corner.
Have a great weekend 🤗

Thank you very much, appreciated 🤗

You had me at your first sentence and then the rest of your post sealed the deal. How absolutely beautiful and soul refreshing!Thank you for sharing!

It was an absolute balm to the soul spending time at this very special little piece of heaven and earth.
Thank you for the nice comments, I'm glad you enjoyed it🤗

The views most certainly are breathtaking, unlike mine haha. The whole tea and toasted tomato looks so quaint. Looks like a nice place to have a relaxing time.😊

I wish I could capture the views better, my camera does them no justice!
It was a lovely place indeed🥰

This looks heavenly... really. 😊

Want!

I could live there actually. It's perfect ❤️

It's a very special place indeed @nickydee, the homesteads of the community way down below look so neat and peaceful!
It would be the ideal location for a retreat.
Nice seeing you dear Nicky xxx

We should all retreat there! :D

Sending love, L. Have a peaceful Sunday ❤️

Thanks Nicky, it's been a frustrating 27 hours of no electricity, came on just after 2pm! Never had such a long outage, but at least made me flop and have a late morning snooze. Hubby's not been well at all. Feeling a little better today.

Lordy :/

Best thing about power outages... forced rest!

I've been rolling with it and boy oh boy... once you slow down you feel how tired you really are, huh? Just do it. You'll be better for it.

I do hope hubby is back on his feet soon! :(

Sending you guys much fortitude and peace ❤️

Places like that are so hard to find.
My world is far too rushed and cluttered and it would be good to escape to a place like this, if only for a few minutes.

Just a couple of hours would refresh and help you unwind, it's a stunning place @steve-o2023
