I absolutely love markets and will always seek out a local market when I go away. During my recent visit to Amsterdam the top recommendation from Google was the Albert Cuyp Market. Apparently this is the largest market in Europe with 260 stalls and is named after a painter from the 17th century. Fantastic! That's the final day of my itinerary sorted. Market in the morning, followed by a quick wizz in Amsterdam city centre before I head off home in the evening
I arrived at the market around 10ish and it was still fairly quiet. It was perfect to check out all the stalls with less people around.
There were some fresh produce stalls, selling fruit and veg, and of course tulips were in season, some were selling at €7.50 for 50. I wish I could buy some to take home with me! And boy the fishmonger stall smelt so fresh and fishy.
Cheese was another of my favourite stall. Even the Gouda I bought in the supermarket the previous day tasted delicious and I wanted to make sure I buy some. I saw this particular stall had a lot of local customers and figured I can't go wrong here.
Apart from fresh produce, and market sold a range of other products but it wasn't the tacky trashy stuff.
These clocks are all recycled, I loved the vintage look of them.
And it was good to see a crypto enthusiast here, maybe he'll accept Hive next?
These outfits look so stylish, too bad I'm too short and can't carry it.
Quick! Somebody call child services please!!!
And of course, with Amsterdam being Amsterdam, there's bound to be stalls that sells related iconic products.
And finally for the crème de la crème. Food!!! Markets are always the best place to get the best food. I love fresh raw fish of any kind, sushi, cerviche, smoked salmon and herring. And I don't come all the way to Netherlands and not have any herring. I remember the first time I tried them was on my first visit to the Netherlands years ago and it was just yummlicuious. This stall was at the end of the street and the sign says it dates back to 1916. There was a film crew here, they said they're making a documentary about no pin (credit card) stalls. The guy said it's kinda random and he didn't seem to be quite convince in what he was doing.
Anyway the stall owner seemed to know what he was doing, and sure enough the herrings were delicious. We had three in the end. I could have had more, but I needed to save tummy space.
Final stop, dessert of course. This store claims to make the original stroopwafel. Not sure how you verify that to be honest. When I walked past on the morning, it was very quiet. By the time I finished my herrings, a queue had built up. I did the touristy thing and joined in. The stroopwafel was freshly made on the spot. It had a bit of caramel in the middle, and half of the top was coated with chocolate. One was enough for the two of us as it was quite sweet and heavy, perfect to round of the visit to the market.
In the end, I spent so much time at the market that I never made it into Amsterdam city centre and had to head directly to the airport. I wish bought another herring, craving already....

That is really awesome. This looks like a pretty cool place. It has to be hard to walk through something like this and still come out the other end with all of your money! The food looks delicious though I am not too sure about the herring! I am glad you had such a good time here!
I love all types of markets as it's a great way to learn more about the locals particularly the food. And it's particularly great they open six days a week. So glad that went there otherwise I'd probably just end up wander aimlessly around Amsterdam city centre, not that there's anything wrong with that, but I much prefer the market !

I'm glad to see that you got good weather when you were there - sun at least. We went again this past Thursday-Saturday and it was cloudy and quite cold almost everyday. It was a completely different trip - much less pleasant.
That's shame about the weather. We only had one not so good day when we were at keukenhof but it was still ok just a little cloudy, the rest of the time was lovely.
One week out otherwise we could have done a meet up 🙂
Glad you got decent weather. It's a shame it was nice at the Keukenhof but the flowers there are bright enough so it probably didn't matter

These herrings were really nice and fresh, the guy was prepping them at the stall. Everything just tasted so nice, bread was soft, pickle was perfect, even the raw onion didn't taste too raw onion, normally I'm not a big fan
Sounds just perfect @livinguktaiwan 😁 I especially like the raw onions on it, the pickle doesn’t have to be on it. Not all places do. Just onions normally.

I also love to visit the market, the market you visit is similar to ours. This is the first time I've heard of herring. If you go abroad, I would like to taste this fish. I really liked the overalls in the market. I wonder how much the difference is between our prices in Turkey and Turkey. I was also interested in those who wanted to shoot documentaries in the market. Markets are a great place to understand more about what the locals eat and exploring different kinds of food that may not be available in your home country. I think that's all part of the fun venturing into the unknown and hopefully stumble across something that you like to eat. I hear Turkey has some very interesting markets as well?

So Stroopwafels are popular in Germany as well? I see them in the supermarkets in UK, but have never bought them here before. It just feel so wrong not to buy at least one when I go to the country of origin.... typical tourist thinking 😅 But seriously, I think it will go down very well with a cup of coffee, maybe I should get some now.

Hello, I prefer to visit the city's markets instead of shopping malls. It's the most beautiful when it's not crowded. Like me, you don't understand how time passes. I don't like fish, but you were interested in the fish you ate, it's the first time I heard it.
Most of the markets in the center of the city I live in are authentic places built in inns among old historical buildings. A market steeped in history. Have a good journey..🥰
Totally agree with you, markets are much more interesting than shopping malls, I always try to go to one when I travel. I love fish, but sadly UK doesn't have that much variety despite us being an island, and I find that quite odd.

I went to Keukenhof, but I bet you locals know of much better (and cheaper 😀) places to see tulips!!!
The places where locals go are much nicer than the tourist traps, and you get a better understanding of how the locals live I think.

Nice! A bit of a creepy stall with the babies, but other than that seems like a usual market.
The herring and how it is being served reminds me of northern Germany. Maybe there is a history behind it.
I found those babies so weird at all, great marketing from the stall owner though!!
And I never thought of herring and Germany, it's always beer, pork knuckle and bratwurst. Now I have to look out for it when I go to Germany next time

Oh, I miss the Netherlands so much! It has such a unique flavor, doesn't it? Those herring looked delicious and the tulips were something I always indulged in. Who could resist?? That is such a kick-butt price. I did have one of the places mail my mom some, fairly cheap, but the markets were better priced!
The markets are awesome and the people are always nice. That is a great tip and exactly what I always looked for: Shop where the locals' shop! The Stroopwafels are addicting! I want one! You have such a wonderful market that I thoroughly enjoyed... I think I could do markets for a living. :)
