A little over a year ago, I took over running the local veggie market on Friday mornings. The market is held at the Catholic church from 11:30 to 12:00 and is run by a group of volunteers. The veggies for the market come from a farm up the mountain in Cerro Punta.
Every Friday the farmer brings his veggies down to us and we sell them to whoever comes to shop. It's a pretty easy process.
The first thing we do is we weigh everything in. We note on a sheet of paper how many pounds of carrots, broccoli, lettuce, cabbage, and more we receive. Then the shoppers can begin buying.
Each person gathers their items and weighs them and records them on a sheet. They then take the sheet to one of the people who calculates how much they owe. Each item has a price and some of the prices change weekly, depending on the market price in the area for the veggies.
I have been shopping at this market since we moved there. One reason is because it's cheaper than the grocery stores. It also has better tasting veggies than the other stands or stores. We prefer the taste of these carrots to all others.
Last year when the lady who used to run it lost her husband, they decided to look for someone else to run the market. Running the market just means turning in orders during the week to the farm (on whatsapp), doing the accounting for the week, making copies, coordinating volunteers, and being in charge the morning of. At first they told me they didn't want me to do it because I was so busy with my 6 kids, but I told them I could handle it. I haven't made many changes and it's gone well. They had a good system set up when I took over.
It's a good little market. We were told at one point it was organic, but we took a tour of the farm a few months ago and learned that it is not organic, but they don't use a lot of bad pesticides. It's an amazing farm. Check out the video I did (above) of it if you're interested.
After market is over, we weigh out the leftovers for our records. The excess veggies are donated to the church, and the whole process usually takes less than an hour!
Thanks to @dswigle for creating the #marketfriday group!

I checked out the videos, the crops looks so healthy on the farm. Life in Panama looks so laidback, must be awesome living there!
P.S. in case you're wondering why there's no response from Denise (@dswigle), she took a break from Hive a long while back. She did let the community know. I miss her, hoping she'll be back soon!
I can understand taking a break. I have had one or two of those in my time here on Hive. 😅
Thanks for checking out my videos. Yes, life is laidback. Sometimes it's hard to adjust to it...like when church that meets at our house should start at 10:30, but at that time, even the pastor is not there yet. Ha!
That is laidback indeed, except for the hostess, you still have to get everything ready on time😉
Too true! We might be considered more Panamanian though as we are usually running late since we expect them to be late as well. Ha!
All the vegetables are fresh Ma'am @apanamamama that's the reason why I love to live in the countryside. There's plenty of fresh and organic fruits and vegetables 😊
Yes, it's so nice to have fresh veggies! Thanks for stopping by!
Wow, all that deliciousness! Our family loves the veggies.
Yes, they are good veggies! We are happy to live in the breadbasket of Panama and have access to so many of them fresh from the farm.
The veggies are so delectable to eat, it's nice seeing you having your outmost fulfilment while doing this Ma'am @apanamamama
Yes, they're nice to have! Thanks for stopping in!
Ooh
It must have been stressful for that lady who lost her husband but I hope the person managing the business is doing it well?
Yes, the farmers are fine and the volunteers all picked up and helped out the lady, so all is good. Thanks for stopping by!
