Hi fellow Ranters,

The other day we got a little scare with my wife’s phone!

iPhone Calendar Attack

The other day we were looking up a place to get new live bait for our fishing adventures and Siena looked it up on the webs. What she wasn’t expecting was there to be a malicious website prominent on the search results of the G search engine! We might have searched too specifically but regardless the damage was done. She clicked on the website that was clearly fake and intended to damage folks phones with some virus or malware. Thankfully we were able to figure it out!

According to some web searches on my phone, this is a common tactic for people who are trying to gain access to someone’s phone. One of the good things about the Apple phones is that they are hardier than the android ones when it comes to security and ability for people to attack your phone. It’s not perfect of course but it’s pretty good!

What we learned was that by clicking on the website it launched a background pop up that was able to access the calendar email address on her phone. Tricky stuff! It added a thousand calendar invites to her phone saying that her phone was at risk, please go to this website and download software to fix it!!!!!11 we all know the look of those by now lol. What I thankfully realized, before looking it up, was that they were just calendar invites and we could remove them without clicking on them.

Her phone looked like it does below. Not fun!

Thankfully the only thing we had to do was open up the calendars we are subscribed to and just unsubscribe and delete the malicious calendar. Once I did that it removed all of the spam and infectious reminders and stuff. That was not the way we planned to spend a Friday evening let me tell you! Lol.

For good measure, we deleted all the browser history and cookies and changed all the important passwords (on our iPad of course lol) and deleted the apps we don’t want people to get ahold of but damn was that scary for a few minutes! Going to keep an eye on the phone for a few days to make sure the accounts are secure before we add some of the apps back slowly.

I did tell her that I would feel a lot better if she used Brave as her default browser since it wouldn’t have let her navigate to the website at all and it’s a much stronger security app. She’s hesitant but hopefully I can convince her to do it lol.

Thanks I appreciate the support!

They can just send you links and hack ya anymore its pretty nuts. Google has a similar problem. Anyone with your email can send you spam directly to your calendar and drive storage. Its something they knew of for years but only made upgrades that further encouraged it by taking away options to prevent it😆

Using Steem in the past and now Hive these problems are 10x more prevalent. I cant wait to get a more secure device and way to use Hive.

That's crazy, typical google though. They don't solve an issue they make it worse or make ways that fixing it ends up costing money for the user lol.

Thankfully I don't have Steem associated to my gmail account, I've got one for proton mail which makes it easiest to keep the BS at bay.
