A lot happened in the second half of 2024 and this made miss out musically among so many other things.
In November, I attended a friends birthday party but guess what, I did not know a single song that was being played. It didn't matter the caliber of artist who owned a song or who was featured.
It was only when the DJ switched to playing old jams that I began to feel among. Before then, I was feeling like an old man with younglings whereas I was with my peers.
That was not a good experience.
Apart from going through a lot, some other things contributed to my not being up to date musically but the stand out reason is this; I had not updated my playlist since February of 2024 and I did not have the chance to attend any event where I will be exposed to new and trending music.
I used to shuffle my music on a streaming app using the free version which helped me keep tabs but then, the Ads became unbearable and made me not enjoy the songs so I deleted the app.
The experience I had at my friend's birthday made me realize how out of touch I was and that is not somewhere I like being.
This year, I have made up my mind to go out more often and to stop playing old songs but to always seek out new songs for my listening pleasure.
Last week, my beautiful neighbor was playing jams on her speaker and I was vibing along from my room, she was impressed and it helped me to strike up a conversation with her.
We discussed a lot about the Nigerian music industry and we became friends and gist mates.
This also encouraged me to continue in my resolution to seek out only new songs and not just that but to also keep in touch with news about my favourite artists.
One of my favorite artists got another of my faves, 'Akpi' arrested. He was released yesterday and today I discussed the matter with my neighbor friend who coincidentally also liked Akpi. This came as a surprise to me because she seemed like someone who would only play cool songs but it also gave me the opportunity to discuss more with her.
She brought her speaker and we played a lot of Akpi's songs until other neighbors began to complain about the noise and we stopped.
I have already changed my 2025 playlist to strictly late 2024 songs and 2025 songs. I can't be left in the dark again especially since I now have a music gist partner whom I would not like to disappoint.
Interestingly, I have come to love many of the recent songs especially "Joy is Coming" by Fido which has been on repeat for the most part of the new year as it bears a Goodwill message with dancing vibes.
Indeed the song also speaks to me personally because I am expecting goodnews and I really hope that Joy is on the way and soon it will arrive at my doorstep.
