Music as described is the pleasant combination of sounds which is premised on human ability to hear sounds and appreciate it. Music is angelong with humans and has found expression in entertainment, education, communication/information and in income/revenue generation either personally or in corporate settings. Music is directly related to the human mind i.e. soul even as many believed it is the food for soul through the sensory perceptions of hearing and seeing. Therefore, through the human senses of hearing and seeing, music makes a huge impact on them and appreciated through them.
Also, it is good to know that the human mind i.e. soul deals with the will, the emotions, the intellect/reasoning, thoughts of we humans and hence, directly related to the memory we keep. Therefore, there is a connection between music and memory even as human experiences whether present or past, good or bad, desirable or non-desirable all has to do with the mind. Take for example, the memory of a love song borne out of a thoughtful mind of a young man to his lover girl then might be refreshing to her even years after been married. This shows us that the mind is both involved in music and the memory of things inasmuch is related to we humans.
• MUSICAL COMPOSITIONS BASED ON MEMORIES OF THE PAST
There are many beautiful compositions borne as a result of thoughtful reflections of past incidences, experiences, memories of some individuals whether good or bad ones. For example, the hymnal (classical music) "It is well with my soul" was written by Horatio G. Spafford based on his life experience and its one of the popular hymnal commonly sung in the Christian circle today.
• EDUCATIVE/RETENTIVE LEARNING USING MUSIC
This is a commonly applied method of learning in the early childhood education using music as a tool to enhance understanding, retention and good memory. I remembered back then while in the early childhood days in school, we learn through songs, rhymes etc which facilitated our learning then and till now still remembered some of them. Our memories of this basic learning was facilitated through music and hence showed that music and memory goes together.
• MEMORIALS FACILITATING UNITY/PEACE FOSTERED THROUGH MUSIC
One major relationship between music and memory is seen in anthems e.g. national with lyrics relating in one way or the other to the memories of the past and also fostering peace/unity. Generations after generations, the national anthems of the nations of the world have a way of relieving the memories of the past as regards the heroes and heroines of the past with their giant strides and hence, fostering peace and unity.
Therefore, it is evident that music and memory has a relationship in that memories can culminate into music or music facilitating easy retention, remembrance of somethings. Infact, it is a known fact that we as humans easily and quickly memorize any music piece we are fascinated to and that shows another connect between the two. Thank you for reading even as comments and contributions are welcomed.
