Music as known is a combination of sounds which are pleasant and pleasing to the hearer. Music is a useful tool in entertainment, education/learning, income generation/wealth creation, fostering peace/unity, health/healing and others. Also, music comes in different genres like traditional, contemporary, folk, gospel etc and has its basic elements like rhythm, harmony, measure, pitch etc. However, another remarkable side of music is how it relates to culture/traditions, religion and other aspects of human life with its impact undeniable.

One major area where the influence of music is greatly felt and remarkable is that as regards religion. All the various forms of religion such as the Christianity, Islam and even the traditional has music involved in it and each has its own ideology of it. Infact, within a religious sect, there might be different perspectives, believes, orientations about music and this shows how dynamic music is as relates to religion. It is also worthy of note to know that music belongs to audio-visual form of art which involves the human ability of sight and sound i.e. seeing and hearing (all things been equal) to appreciate it. Therefore, music impacts on human mind i.e. soul with its gate of entry been majorly sight and sound.

In true religion, the mind plays along way and since music impacts greatly on our mind either positively or negatively, then music and religion has some form of common ground. Secular music may be termed as any form of music which are non-religious based. Let me categorically emphasise it here that not all secular music are bad or towards negatively as some has reservations about it, some are good and add up to what learnt religiously. For example, there are secular music that promotes justice, love, peace which are fundamentals in religious cycle. Also, secular music doesn't necessarily mean a type of a particular music genre, it can cut across different music genre.

Secular music can indeed impacts on the spirituality of any individual either positively or the otherwise. Secular music that promotes promiscuity, use of vulgar words, immoral sights etc can negatively impacts on the human mind and hence, breeds negativity in such minds which if not careful can lead to actions and practices that may be against the religious believes of such individual. Some secular music whose contents are not civil, demeaning, immoral or inhumane actually risks ban by the law of the land because of its untowards effect especially amidst the young minds. Therefore, secular music can affect the spirituality i.e. state of religiousity of any individual if it negatively impacts of the mind of such individual.

Secular music can aswell impacts positively on the spirituality of any individual if it positively impacts on it. The positive impact is in it corroborating with the religious view, believe, practice of such person's faith and not against it or weakens it. Therefore, the choice is with individuals to deliberately and conciously chose wisely which type of secular music to listen to or watch and to clearly identify the intended purpose. Therefore, secular music can affects one's spirituality by constant exposure to wrong music contents against one's faith because it will negatively impacts on the mind (soul) with the sense of hearing and seeing been the gateway.
