The summer-like spring temperatures in Canada right now have me thinking back to the great winter we had. If you ask me, there isn't much of a better time than winter to visit the more famous parts of the Rockies. The cold keeps the big hordes away!
In my reminiscing I realized there were a few photos from our winter trip that I had yet to post on Hive, so here they are!
"Crystal Heart"
The first morning of the trip was a good one. I setup my camera and tripod in a small opening in the ice along the lake's shore - but nothing else! It was too small for me to fit inside. I used my phone as a remote shutter and viewfinder. Many shots were required to focus stack the scene, which was a pain because I was using a fully manual lens, meaning I had to awkwardly reach into the hole and adjust the focus and aperture rings from the front. Then I would hide out of camera view and use the app on my phone to take each exposure. At 10mm (full frame) this is one of the widest shots in my portfolio.
"Now or Never"
As we pulled into the parking lot I immediately spotted this scene in the river and knew I had to go in. I don't remember what temperature it was, but it was certainly not warm. I didn't have waders or anything like that, but I hopped in anyway and spent about 10 minutes getting the shot I had in mind. Unsurprisingly, I came out with soaking wet and freezing feet, but I was somewhat prepared. In my friend's truck I had a towel and spare boots. Changing and drying out in the cold wasn't exactly pleasant. Eventually my toes stopped being numb, switching back to fiery pain. It was probably a good 45 minutes or so before they were back to normal!
Forgotten Light
I never had much interest in this location due to how heavily it has been photographed. But I actually really enjoyed visiting and shooting it. We were greeted with moody light and a roaring avalanche on the far side of the lake. Nature is awesome.
