Reynisfjara beach and killer waves, Iceland

Reynisfjara beach, also called Black sand beach, is located near the town Vik along the south coast of Iceland. It's well known for its amazing black sand, impressive sea stacks and huge, sometimes dangerous waves.

When I traveled to Iceland in January 2021 I had to quarantine for 5 days. I choose to stay in Vik for those days. That way I had the beach nearby so I could walk a little and do some photography during my stay.

You can reach the beach from two sides, the western and the eastern side. They provide different angels to the sea stacks as the two beaches are separated by a mountain leading into the sea. You cannot walk around the cape, so you have to take the car to go to the other side.

Killer waves.

The western side is called Reynisfjara beach, the eastern is just referred to as black sand beach. Reynisfjara beach is known for its caves and basalt formations as for its dangerous so called "sneaker" waves. I guess they meant sneaky waves, as every once in a while a huge wave comes from nowhere and washes the entire beach.

It's really hard to predict such a wave, and when it arrives it's there all of the sudden ad it moves fast. I had to run several times and got wet feet too in one occasion. Unfortunately a few tourists have died due to the waves in the pas years. The current in those waves is very strong and the water of the northern Atlantic ocean is very cold. If you got sucked back into the ocean, changes of survival become very low.

So, if you may ever visit this place, be careful. It's no joke.

Have a great day!
Cheers,
Thijs

Oh wow, these are fascinating captures. Cannot even pick my favorite, they are all equally awesome :) Great job.

@tipu curate

Thank you very much and thanks a lot for the support! 😀🙏🙏

As someone who loves the sea and anything to do with the ocean, this is an amazing post. I love the video of the crashing waves and the light in the photos is so striking. I have to show these to @barracudadiaries she LOVES Iceland. Really great photos @thijsvermeer

I have been to this beach. The signs make it very clear that you need to be constantly aware and also don't mess with mother nature! The sound of the tumbling lava rocks is so hypnotic though.

Thank you very much @donnadavisart 😀🙏 and thanks for the support and reblogging my post. Really appreciate it!

Stunning @thijsvermeer. 😎
The seagull flying towards you, the waves and the backdrop of those peeks. Beautiful.

Thank you very much @littlebee4 It’s such an amazing place, I could stay there all day long. 😀👍

You are welcome @thijsvermeer I so can imagine 😉😎

Beautiful shots @thijsvermeer, really loving the splash from the 5th picture. The beach is indeed one te be carefull with your stuff and yourself on the other hand the power of the water is something majestic here with the beautiful sound from the rolling stones😍

Thanks a lot! Yes, it’s an amazing place. The sounds, the power of the waves and all those birds circling the sea stacks. I really love that place. Looking forward to visit it again. 😀

Awesome shots. Looks like something out of a dream.

Thanks a lot! It’s a magical place! 😀

This is a favorite place of mine. I will admit to being completely annoyed by anyone not heeding the warning signs. Hubs and I call those 3 rock formations 'the 3 sisters'...not sure why but we assume they were 3 troll sisters out playing on the beach when the sun came up to turn them to stone. That's what happens to trolls, right? ;)
Great pictures. Again, thanks for the memories!

Thanks a lot! Yes, people not ignoring those signs is really annoying. There are not many warning signs in Iceland, so when they are there, you better respect them.

I like the troll story, typically Scandinavian. 😀👍 Coming march I will guide a photo tour in Iceland, I will share that story with them if you don’t mind. 😉

Sure! It's hard not to make up little stories when you're in that environment. You hear one troll story and it's all you can think about...well, that's how it is for me ;)

You managed to capture the majestic power of the waves quite well. One can hear the waves crashing against the beach just looking at your pictures :-)

Thank you very much! I tried to capture exactly that. Thanks for letting me know. 🙏 Those waves are really strong and you can hear all the pebbles and rocks roll when one hits the beach.

You made some stunning shots there!

Thank you very much!😀🙏

What a spectacular publication and full of art, thanks for sharing.

Thank you very much! 😀🙏🙏

Very impressive shots.

Thank you very much!😀🙏

Such a wild landscape! Love all these shots, you’ve done well!
How long did you travel around for in Iceland?

Thanks a lot! I’ve traveled two times two weeks, in January and in March 2021. Due to travel restrictions the island was almost completely empty. So I couldn’t resist going back after my experiences in January. 😅

Excellent post, certainly have your wits about you when visiting this place, thanks for the heads up, as I'm hoping to get to Iceland in the next 2 or 3 years. Fantastic shots, but it does look very cold indeed.

Thanks a lot, I visited in winter time. But I imagine the ocean would still be very cold during summer time. Better be careful there. I hope you manage to get to Iceland. It’s an amazing experience! 😀👍

Love the long exposure shots and the sunset. This location was amazing. Did you head to diamond beach too?

Thanks a lot! It really is an amazing place! Yes, I visited diamond beach too. Will do an update about it soon. 😀👍

Indeed this beach looks amazing, from what I saw it is not so touristy, or because it is not the summer season.

Thanks! I was there in January and I’m March 2021, there were almost no tourists in Iceland due to travel restrictions. I was lucky to get there during that time. Normally this beach is crowded… 😅
