New Bedford Historic District
Good Morniong and have a great day
Today I will share a few shots from a walk in the historic district here in New Bedford
New Bedford is a city in Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States. It is located on the Acushnet River in what is known as the South Coast region. Up through the 17th century, the area was the territory of the Wampanoag Native American people.
English colonists bought the land on which New Bedford would later be built from the Wampanoag in 1652, and the original colonial settlement that would later become the city was founded by English Quakers in the late 17th century. The town of New Bedford itself was officially incorporated in 1787
In the 19th Century New Bedford gained worldwide reputation as the greatest whaling port and the richest city per capita in the world. Portuguese and Cape Verdean immigrants formed the backbone of the whaling industry, on the wharves and on the high seas.
ITs a charming city with many beautiful spots to enjoy,

and when here I often take a photo of this building because i gues sof the JJ in the name but it is a cool building
Upon first glance, the Double Bank Building in New Bedford appears to be one building. However, it is actually two buildings constructed by two different builders to house two different banks, thus the name. The original banks were the Merchants Bank, used by wealthy merchants, and the Mechanics Bank, the bank used by everyone else.
The Double Bank Building, which as built in 1833, was restored in 1971. The main tenant today is J.J. Best Banc. This is not a fancy way to spell bank; the company finances the purchase of collectible automobiles, boats, planes and motorcycles.

Preserving old/inherited a statement made by the people of pride, sadly too many of our buildings are damaged or defaced, a crying shame.

that is such a shame a pity when people do not respect and preserve history
One thing we cannot change is our history.
Good morning, thank you for sharing these beautiful shots of New Bedford’s historic district. Your photos really capture the charm and character of the city, and it’s fascinating to learn about its rich history. The Double Bank Building, in particular, is a standout with its unique story and architecture.

indeed so much beauyt here I had hoped to explore mor eof it this year but health issues for me and my wife put an end to those plans
What a quaint historic district. Looks like a great place to walk especially early like that before all the people show up! Interesting bank though, Double bank because it housed two banks. Kind of like doublemint gum! Do they still make that?
