Mattapoisett Wharf at sunrise

Mattapoisett Wharf at sunrise

Over the warmer months I got out for plenty of walks and knew that when winter came I would be getting out for less walks so its good I got plenty during the warmer months to revisit when its to cold for me to head out for walks, today ( as I prepare this post) is such a day the temp as I sit here is 18F with a real feel of 8F, for those who work in Celsius that's -8C with a real feel of -13C

When I grew up the weather was reported in Celsius and that's the way I always used to think of it, and it kind of makes more sense to me with freezing point being 0C or 32/F zero just seems more logical to mark freezing point, but that said living here in the states for over 20 years now I think more in Fahrenheit these days.
But here I go waffling away to start the post, one of the places I visited a couple of times during the warmer months was the town wharf in Mattapoisett and I have plenty of photos from there I never got around to editing and sharing so that's what I am doing in this post.

A nice glow on the horizon that morning

Mattapoisett is a nearby town a short drive from where I live with a population of around 6500 people, so a small town but quite charming, I have visited Ned's Point where there is the lighthouse I have shared in previous posts, and the town wharf, but its a quaint little town and I am sure there smore spots I should explore there this year.
from where I live to the wharf is around 9 Miles, and takes about 16 Minutes to drive there, but as most of the trip is on the highway it is quicker to get there that to fort Tabor here in new Bedford which is only 4 Miles away.
These first couple of shots show the colors of the sunrise and some of the many boats in the water off this wharf.

More of the boats tied up on the docks at the wharf, which made me think what is the difference between a Port and a Wharf, and if what I thought was correct
I found it them defined online as
A port is a cultural center established as a maritime harbor. A wharf is a structure upon which boats can dock.

There is a little park beside the Wharf with a couple of seats where one can sit and relax and enjoy the view

And on the other side of the Wharf another green area with this gazebo, I pictured some local events being held there, perhaps a band doing a summer concert, or a wedding ceremony.

I would love to sit on one of these benches and enjoy the sunrise ... that's a lie, of course. It's a beautiful and inviting place, but I couldn't sit still when there's so much beauty around to take photos of 😁

Beautiful photos and nice story as always, JJ 😀

PS, our metric system and Celsius is much easier or better said it's simple to understand, I think, but when you have grown up with the other system the simple system might sound more complicated 😉

I still think in Celsius, too. And litres. And metres. I will readily admit, however, that the names of measured units in the Imperial system are far more colourful than in metric. I mean, is not kind of awesome to say that I am 97,804.8 twips tall?

I really want a place to use that organically. Maybe next time I'm at the DMV.

I have more or less converters to Fahrenheit living here, now Twips was a term i had not come across always good to learn something new each day

Ha! What is a twip? Now I have to Google it. Ha! Who knew?

A twip (abbreviating "twentieth of a point", "twentieth of an inch point",[1] or "twentieth of an Imperial point"[citation needed]) is a typographical measurement, defined as 1⁄20 of a typographical point. One twip is 1⁄1440 inch or 17.64 μm

today ( as I prepare this post) is such a day the temp as I sit here is 18F with a real feel of 8F, for those who work in Celsius that's -8C with a real feel of -13C

We always used (and still use) Celsius. We had the same temperature in the previous days. Today is not that cold. The morning was -2 °C, and currently it is 0 °C.

Have a nice day. All the best. Greetings and much love from Hungary.

Today is even cooler, at the moment its around -9C and thats the highest it will get all day

You to have a nice day

Nice shots! I would love to be sitting on those benches with a hot coffee and a good book!

thanks, and sitting with a book and a hot drink wouldn't be me, I do like books but when outdoors I like walking back and forth and never drink hot drinks, but I could see my wife sittingthere with a hot drink and a book while I wander about taking photos :)

lolol we are opposites! my wife is the constant wanderer and cold-drink ingester!

LOL yeah sounds like opposites for sure

That is a really cool gazebo. I like the whale wind vane at the top of it. Please tell me you got some up close shots of that! Awesome pictures by the way. The way I read it a wharf would be in a port. That's just my thinking though.

Thanks and yes I do have some more shots of the Gazebo and the wind vane :) and also of a cool Marlin piece that is at the end of one of the piers

have a great day

Awesome! I can't wait to see them!

Not sure when that will be

Take your time, I will be here :)

I think this is the first time I realized you’re not originally from the states, @tattoodjay. Where are you from originally?

You are so smart to store up photos for posts in the cold months. I think I will do the same. It’s so frigid here that one must take layer up to cover all exposed skin. I do it, and enjoy it… but it’s just not as delightful as pulling on a light sweater and walking out the door!

These are lovely shots. I love that gazebo!

I am a Kiwi, aka a New Zealander, mind you I haven't lived there for well over 30 years, and haven't been back there for maybe 10 years now and may never make it there again, and of course growing up there our winters were so mild compared to here LOL

I used to get out in the winter all the time with layers it didn't bother me that much, but since I had TB in 2007 and had residual lung damage I find breathing in the cold air gets to me to easily these days, but I have managed to get out a few times and coped OK so far, but when it goes to far below freezing points I tend to either stay in or go for very short walks

Isnt the gazebo cool I do have more shots of it and the wind vane which may be another post in the future

I think you need to find Icelandic moss (lat.Cetrária islándica) at the pharmacy. Its infusions are very good for the lungs and against tuberculosis. Just do not brew it with water above 60C.

Nice shots again man, I took some shots with similar light recently down by the lake beside my house, with a crescent moon. They turned out pretty cool, will do a post soon. Am I ok to tag you to see what you think of them?

Thanks and yes feel free to tag me I would love to see them :)

Cool, I will do, hopefully I'll get that post together this week. Would Photography Lovers be the best community for it or where would you recommend?

Looking forward to seeing it, I do use photography Lovers often its a good community

Great - thanks

Hmmm. That's quite cold. I will like to experience it someday.

What's your outfit like exploring the cold and taking these pictures?

the cold didnt use to bother me much I feel it more these days part of getting older I guess
as to what I wear
I generally have long johns/Thermal leg coverings under my jeans, a tshirt, warm hoody and a layers jacket that both keeps me warm and stops the windjacket, sometimes a Beanie on my head, and gloved where I can uncover the thumb and index finger for taking photos

I think the one of the gazebo was the best - it was perfect 🙌

Have a great day

I really thought the first shot was sweet! Soft and lovely and it was perfectly beautiful. However, then you started parading out the cotton candy skies and you know I am a huge sucker for those.

You live in such a beautiful part of the country, albeit a bit chilly in the winterish months. But, there is redemption in those beautiful wharves that you visit on a daily basis.

The bench makes a nice place to sit and ponder the movement of the skies.

Thanks always for making the platform a little more beautiful.

Thanks and yes I know you do love the cotton candy clouds

And yes I am so lucky that live here so much beauty all around

Beautiful work! Is that lens a fix 17mm lens? I am impressed on how level that horizon line is with that focal length. Also those colors in the yellowy shots are spot on! I felt at ease while looking through them. Felt good since the temps didn't get over 23 here today.. That's in Fahrenheit! lol. Going down to 10 or 11 tonight. Just lovely.

I was using the Tamron 17-28F2.8 lens I am quite happy with how it performs
I can relate to the temps the high here today was 15F and windy to nasty out for me as I get older I wish I could hibernate for winter 😂

Thanks for the kind comment I take it very highly coming from you

Have a great day and stay warm

Never take my comments to highly for I am NOT worthy of such compliments. hehe.

I have a Tamron 28-300mm 3.5-6.3 and love it. I sold my 70-300 a while back but liked that one too. They make some quality lens.

You stay warm too!

I have the Tamron pair 17-28 and the 28-70 love this pair
I have the Sony 24-240 and it’s great for the range it has but otherwise nit that happy with it
I have seen reviews of the new Tamron 35-150 F2/2.8
That looks great but have to save up for that one

Is your hand better? If the weather is cold, the newly healed wounds will sometimes be quite painful. Can't stop you from going out and enjoying. The sunrise and sunset colors through the Sony are quite clear and true. Maybe I will own one in the future

Thanks for the visit and yes my finger is a lot better, it does get stiff in the cold but doesnt slow me down much now:)

I am very happy with the Sony cameras I have had, but the best camera is the one you have with you even if its only a phone :)

so nice to see from mattapoisett. lots of memories from the boatyard close to ned's point

I do like what I have seen of that area I must explore it more this year

that is amazing 😍😍😍
