Leicester Hollow Trail

Silver Lake

Leicester Hollow Trail is in Addison County near Brandon, Vermont.

Reflections

The route we took starts at the Minnie Baker Trailhead. From there you climb up to Chandler Ridge for about a mile then join the Leicester Hollow Trail. Leicester Hollow Trail follows Leister Hollow Brook to Silver Lake. Then we hiked down to the Silver Lake Trailhead where we left a car before starting. The entire hike was about 7.2 miles.

Lead dog

Leicester Hollow Trail follows an old carriage road that took vacationers from the train station in Brandon up to the Silver Lake Hotel. The hotel was built in 1879 and burned down in 1942. Train service to Brandon ended in the 1960s.

Leicester Hollow Brook

Much of the hike follows Leicester Hollow Brook. Most of the carriage road is evident but sections are gone and the trail becomes a single track clinging to the side of the hollow.

A clear section of the old road.

Silver Lake beach

Silver Lake has a National Forest Service campground along with a nice beach and picnic area.

View from Dam

Silver Lake is a natural lake but one end has a hydroelectic damn built in the 1916. The generator creates 2.2 MW of electricity.

Pano on beach

Here's a panoramic view from the beach. The lake covers 110 acres.

Beach

The beach is at the site of the old hotel. Some granite steps leading down to the water are the only remnants of the once grand hotel.

I found this photo of the Silver Lake Hotel dated between 1900 and 1906 on the Library of Congress website

Wow, what a beautiful view my brother.
You captured it so well

Thanks it was a beautiful day

A very beautiful place, a trip there will definitely be very memorable and also enjoyable.

Thanks it was a nice hike

What a grand old place! It's pretty incredible how nature reclaims the earth.

Very fun hiking these trails and thinking of days gone by. It was a different world back then with grand hotels in the mountains for summer vacations.

It was the same here with Grand Hotels on the shores of Lake Superior! The Hotel Chequamegon, built in 1877 in Ashland, also had a fire, but was rebuilt. It is reported to be haunted.

LEO Power Up Day - October 15, 2024

Lovely quiet trail walk. I think the fall colors will be nicer in the coming weeks.
Sad to hear the hotel was lost in a fire.

Thanks it was a nice fall walk. The colors are steadily getting better 👍

You're welcome.

I like that super skinny log bridge. Just don't slip in such cold weather.

Good thing my wife had her walking sticks...

I fell off one of those log bridges into 2 ft of water when I was a kid. Fortunately it was in the heat of arizona in the mountains.
