Vienna welcomed me illuminated with twinkling lights and decorated streets. A festive atmosphere was felt at every step, while the stalls and smells of different foods invited passers-by to stop, try and enjoy. There was something magical about the fact that the city was decorated in the spirit of the New Year - every square looked like a postcard, and the smell of cinnamon, roasted chestnuts and mulled wine hung in the air.
I couldn't resist. I started with the most famous — Vienna sausages. At one of the numerous stalls, I ordered a classic bratwurst, with the obligatory mustard and bread. When I took a bite, I realized why they are so popular here. Juicy, perfectly seasoned and freshly baked, they were a true explosion of flavors. I savored every bite as I walked through the crowds, listening to the sounds of holiday music and watching the passers-by.
On the other corner I came across a donut stand. The warm dough, covered in chocolate and sprinkled with powdered sugar, was the perfect combination — crispy on the outside and soft and airy on the inside. I tried the vanilla cream filled donut and immediately regretted not getting another one. The smell of donuts followed me for a long time, but I knew that there were many more flavors waiting for me that I had to try.
Donners attracted me at every turn. It was impossible to pass a kiosk without stopping and ordering one. Each place had its own version, but they all had something in common — fresh vegetables, juicy meat and perfectly soft buns. I liked the doner with spicy sauce and plenty of salad the most. I ate it while standing next to a small stall, surrounded by people who were also enjoying this simple but incredibly delicious food.
Besides that, I also tried various sweets. Pancakes with marmalade, coconut balls and even traditional Viennese cakes sold in small, warm stands. Each bite was a story in itself — a unique combination of flavors and aromas that made me forget about the cold biting my cheeks.
Vienna is a city where food is art and the street is a gastronomic paradise. As I walked back to the hotel, with a bag full of trinkets I bought at the holiday stalls, I couldn't help but smile. There is something magical in moments like this, when all the tastes and smells of Vienna are there, within reach, and when the city welcomes you with warmth and hospitality that you will never forget.
