A tour to Morro Branco and Canoa Quebrada, stunning beach landscapes of Ceará - Brazil Series #2 [ENG-ESP]

When you think of Brazil as a tourist destination, what comes to mind for most people is Rio de Janeiro with Christ the Redeemer, Ipanema beach, the Sugar Loaf cable car, samba or carnival, is what they have promoted most of their country, and while all this looks super attractive, when I planned my trip there a few years ago, I wanted to explore also less famous places but that sounded promising. Today I share with you some images I took at two of the most visited beaches in the state of Ceará: Morro Branco and Canoa Quebrada.

Cuando se piensa en Brasil como destino turístico, lo que viene a la mente de la mayoría de las personas es Río de Janeiro con el Cristo Redentor, la playa de Ipanema, el teleférico de Pan de Azúcar, la samba o el carnaval, es lo que más han promocionado ellos de su país, y si bien todo esto se ve súper atractivo, cuando planifiqué mi viaje para allá hace unos años, quise explorar también lugares menos famosos pero que sonaban prometedores. Hoy comparto con ustedes algunas imágenes que hice en dos de las playas más visitadas del estado de Ceará: Morro Branco y Canoa Quebrada.

Months before traveling to Brazil I had bought a tourist guide with which I put together my itinerary for the country, and these beaches were on my list, so when in the hostel where I stayed in Fortaleza they offered me a tour that included them, I didn't hesitate to sign up to go. The tour bus picked me up and before 7:00 in the morning we left the city, a while after taking the highway many dunes appeared on the sides, this semi-arid landscape is something that characterizes the state of Ceará, in the northeast of the country.

Meses antes de viajar a Brasil había comprado una guía turística con la que armé mi itinerario por el país, y estas playas estaban en mi lista, así que cuando en el hostal donde me hospedé en Fortaleza me ofrecieron un paseo que las incluía, no dudé en anotarme para ir. El autobús de la excursión pasó por mí y antes de las 7:00 de la mañana dejamos la ciudad, un rato después de tomar la autopista aparecieron muchas dunas a los lados, este paisaje semiárido es algo que caracteriza al estado de Ceará, en el noreste del país.

These first two photos that you see were taken from the window of the moving bus, that's why you can see some reflections and spots. Approximately in an hour and a half we arrived at the city of Beberibe where the beach of Morro Branco is located and there we were welcomed by a guide, we also changed means of transportation, we got on some fun buggies, those little cars that are made to roll on the sand.

Estas dos primeras fotos que ven las hice desde la ventana del autobús en movimiento, por eso se notan algunos reflejos y manchas. Aproximadamente en una hora y media llegamos a la ciudad de Beberibe donde queda la playa de Morro Branco y allí nos recibió un guía, además cambiamos de medio de transporte, nos montamos en unos divertidos buggies, esos pequeños carros que están hechos para rodar por la arena.

We had barely advanced a few meters when I saw some white turbines in the distance, then I learned that the state of Ceará is one of the largest producers of wind energy in Brazil.

Apenas habíamos avanzado unos metros cuando vi a lo lejos unas turbinas blancas, luego supe que el estado de Ceará es uno de los mayores productores de energía eólica de Brasil.

The first stop of the tour was the local handicraft center, a place with many stores and nice objects, like the vase you see in the photo below, shown by our guide. These glass vases with designs made with the sand of different colors that you get here, are the most popular product, I really found them very original although as souvenirs they are a bit heavy to carry, but they are available in different sizes.

La primera parada del paseo fue en el centro de artesanía local, un sitio con muchas tiendas y lindos objetos, como el jarrón que ven en la foto que sigue, mostrado por nuestro guía. Estos jarrones de vidrio con diseños hechos con la arena de diferentes colores que se consigue aquí, son el producto más popular, de verdad me parecieron muy originales aunque como souvenirs son algo pesados para llevar, pero los hay de diferentes tamaños.

From the handicraft center we had a first panoramic view of Morro Branco beach, is super wide.

Desde el centro de artesanía pudimos tener una primera panorámica de la playa de Morro Branco, es súper amplia.

Its particularity are the reddish earth cliffs that border it, where there are also some labyrinths through which you can walk.

Su particularidad son los acantilados de tierra rojiza que la bordean, donde además hay unos laberintos por los que se puede caminar.

We went there afterwards, it is really amazing, I had never been in a place like this before.

Justamente para allá fuimos después, es realmente alucinante, nunca había estado en un lugar así.

Its official name is Beberibe Cliffs Natural Monument and its shape is due to erosion. On its walls you can see the sands of different colors, the guide told us that there are about 12 shades.

Su nombre oficial es Monumento Natural de los Acantilados de Beberibe y su forma se debe a la erosión. En sus paredes puedes ver las arenas de diferentes colores, el guía nos dijo que hay como 12 tonalidades.

First you see it from above and you have the sea as a bonus of this lush landscape, and then you go down to the part that is like a labyrinth.

Primero lo ves desde arriba y tienes el mar como un plus de este exuberante paisaje, y luego bajas hasta la parte que es como un laberinto.

As you enter the trail you are enveloped by the sandy and stone walls, it seems as if you were on another planet.

Al entrar al sendero te envuelven las paredes arenosas y de piedra, parece que estuvieras en otro planeta.

In some parts of these walls there are holes where sulfur comes out, but despite the heat that day I thought this is too paradisiacal to be hell 😂.

En algunas partes de estas paredes hay huecos por donde sale azufre, pero a pesar del calor que hacía ese día, pensé que esto es demasiado paradisíaco para ser el infierno 😂.

At the end of the tour we went out near the beach and there was a part of the ground full of holes, quite strange.

Al final del recorrido salimos cerca de la playa y había una parte del suelo llena de agujeros, bastante extraño.

The buggies were waiting for us there to continue the tour and we rolled at full speed along the shore of the beach, the view of the cliffs from there is phenomenal.

Los buggies nos esperaban allí para continuar el tour y rodamos a toda velocidad por la orilla de la playa, la vista de los acantilados desde ahí es fenomenal.

We passed through a village where the road was sandy, then we came out onto the paved road and saw again the turbines of a wind farm, but this time more closely.

Pasamos por una población donde la vía era de arena, luego salimos a la carretera asfaltada y vimos de nuevo turbinas de un parque eólico, pero esta vez más de cerca.

The next stop, about 15 minutes later, was at another beach where there is a cave and several freshwater springs.

La siguiente parada, unos 15 minutos después, fue en otra playa donde se encuentra una cueva y varias fuentes de agua dulce.

Look at these cute donkeys, I guess they were there to walk people, they looked in good condition but it was too hot to subject them to that. Tourism is often cruel to animals, I don't support that.

Miren a estos lindos burros, supongo que estaban ahí para pasear a la gente, se veían en buenas condiciones pero hacía demasiado calor para someterlos a eso. El turismo es muchas veces cruel con los animales, no apoyo eso.

In this beach called Praia Das Fontes there are also cliffs and some caves, they are called Gruta da Mãe D'água (Mother of Water Cave). Inside the atmosphere feels very cool, it's not very big so we didn't spend much time there.

En esta playa que se llama Praia Das Fontes también hay acantilados y unas cuevas, se llaman Gruta da Mãe D'água. Adentro el ambiente se siente muy fresco, no es muy grande así que no estuvimos mucho tiempo allí.

Outside are the fresh water springs, some are still natural and others have been channeled. The guide told us that this was "the stream of youth", so just in case I got a little wet 😄.

Afuera están los manantiales de agua dulce, algunos se mantienen naturales y otros han sido canalizados. El guía nos dijo que ese era “el chorro de la juventud”, así que por si acaso me mojé un poco 😃.

We walked a bit along the beach but didn't swim because the tour continued, so we got back on the buggies and crossing the dunes we arrived at a spectacular lagoon, its name is Lagoa do Uruaú.

Caminamos un poco por la playa pero no nos bañamos porque el tour seguía, así que nos montamos de nuevo en los buggies y atravesando las dunas llegamos a una espectacular laguna, su nombre es Lagoa do Uruaú.

We stayed there for half an hour, then they took us to a tourist stop where I bought a delicious ice cream. There we changed means of transportation and returned to the bus to complete the last part of the tour.

Estuvimos una media hora allí, luego nos llevaron a un parador turístico donde compré un rico helado. Allí cambiamos de medio de transporte y volvimos al autobús para completar el último tramo del tour.

After a little more than an hour we arrive at the city of Aracatí, where Canoa Quebrada is located, another beautiful beach with with cliffs of an intense reddish brown color.

Luego de poco más de una hora llegamos a la ciudad de Aracatí, donde queda Canoa Quebrada, otra hermosa playa con acantilados de color marrón rojizo intenso.

To go down to the beach there are wooden stairs, the first thing you find once you step on the sand is a huge rock that has the name of the beach carved with a crescent moon and a star, it is the ideal spot to take a picture.

Para bajar a la playa hay unas escaleras de madera, lo primero que te encuentras una vez pisas la arena es una enorme roca que tiene el nombre de la playa tallado junto a una media luna y una estrella, es el punto ideal para tomarse una foto.

Canoa Quebrada is very long, crowded and has all kinds of services.

Canoa Quebrada es muy larga, concurrida y cuenta con todo tipo de servicios.

It was already noon and we were told we were going to be there for about three hours, so I relaxed, went for a walk on the beach and took a dip, my first in Brazilian waters.

Ya era mediodía y nos dijeron que íbamos a estar allí como tres horas, así que me relajé, fui a caminar por la playa y me di un chapuzón, el primero en aguas de Brasil.

There is a lot of wind here so people come to practice sports like kitesurfing.

Hay mucho viento aquí, por lo que viene gente a practicar deportes como el kitesurf.

Something interesting I read is that in the 1970s, Canoa Quebrada became a paradise for hippies, at that time it wasn't a known tourist destination, today it is one of the most visited beaches in Ceará, a state that has more than 600 km of coastline.

Algo interesante que leí es que en la década de 1970, Canoa Quebrada se convirtió en un paraíso para los hippies, en esa época no era un destino turístico conocido, actualmente es una de las playas más visitadas de Ceará, estado que tiene más de 600 km de costa.
