Located in the beautiful valley of Itria, in the region of Apulia in southern Italy. The town is characterized by unique white buildings with gray conical roofs (famous Trullo).
Alberobello, a strange and picturesque destination, well known for its ancient construction: limestone houses, built without the use of mortar, with conical roofs (so-called Trulli). It has been a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, precisely because this way of construction dates back to prehistoric times.
What makes these houses so unique in the world is that, due to a number of economic, social and cultural reasons, they as such have survived through the centuries.
The story behind Alberobello
Today, Alberobello has about 11,000 inhabitants and about 1500 Trulli houses.
In general, the town consists of two parts. Rione Monti is a more tourist area with souvenir shops and restaurants and typical monuments of this city. Rione Aia Piccola is the oldest part of the city, more rural, unchanged by the appearance of tourist activities, where some of the inhabitants still live in Trulli houses.
Trulli symbols painted on many roofs add a veil of secrecy to Alberobello. There are various designs, including the sun, moon, love hearts and other pagan symbols. It is believed that the purpose of the symbols was to drive away demons and bring happiness to the inhabitants.
