Yesterday we met up with my parents for Sunday lunch and went to our favourite pub in the city, The Wykeham Arms but it turned out to be a bit of a let down compared to normal. Don’t get me wrong the food was excellent but the service was not great at all, not up to it’s usual at all. Lunch took well over 35 minutes and we chased it because another table got theirs faster and they arrived long after we did.
In the end though, we enjoyed our food and decided that they might have been short staffed on a very busy day being Remembrance Sunday and they were fully booked.
Afterwards I had a little bit of time to take some photos, all of which were captured with my Ricoh GR3x and later edited a touch in Lightroom.
As you walk around the side of the Cathedral you pass through these fantastic wooden doors that lead to the Cloisters. In close up they are very interesting and if they could talk, there would be some stories to tell.
These windows are beautiful and inlove the interior shutters. I very nearly rented an apartment in the city when I was younger with windows like this. I can remember changing my mind at the time when they told me how much it would be per month. I was only a junior developer at the time on a small salary.
This is what I was looking for, some red on a very grey day, just to the front of the cathedral.
The cathedral itself; have you heard the story about the diver who saved it though?!
His name was William Walker, who worked tirelessly to resolve the issue of the sinking cathedral - https://www.winchester-cathedral.org.uk/collections/notable-people/
There is an art shop by the Kingsgate and underneath St Swithuns church, very close to the Wykeham Arms that always has a collection of books outside and is something of a magnet for visitors. We always have a little browse there and have bought stuff there in the past.
Finally, the houses close to the cathedral are all beautiful.
Thanks for reading! See you soon!
We had a nice day there fairly recently. I don't think I'd been since I was a kid. The cathedral is very nice with lots of history. I knew about the diver thanks to this song.
Great song! There are parts of the Cathedral I haven’t yet visited and keep meaning to. The crypt for example but I’ve seen the Winchester bible in the library which is rather special.
