Firefall - waterfall looking like lava

Firefall is a natural phenomenon that occurs a few days a year when the setting sun hits the east face of El Capitan in Yosemite Valley at just the right angle to illuminate Horsetail Fall in such a way that the water looks like lava spilling over the rock. One weekend in February the conditions were perfect - the melting snowpack above El Capitan provided enough water flow while the low clouds hanging in Yosemite didn't block the light.

I have to say the experience itself exceeded my (already pretty high) expectations. I've never been and I thought it's one of those things that looks much better in photos than while you're seeing it, but the in person experience was actually amazing. The color lasted for 15 mins and the communal experience of watching it with lots of people screaming and clapping at the end was fun.

That's so cool! Imagine the first people to settle in this place seeing that and being blown away by it.

I've seen close up shots a bit more but the wide shot really helps show just how amazing the whole scene is.

Yeah, native people that settled in Yosemite must have been blown away every day haha

😍 "...yeah I think I'm going to live here"

Lava look like a waterfall 😅

Very cool; hope to see it one day.

One of these years I'll get out there for firefall. Great images Marcin!

Thank you! Let me know if you make it up there!

It looks so beautiful. I have been really wanting to see it but then always pick somewhere else because of the photos I have seen of the crowds. Your photos are stunning and make me want to book the trip now!

If you want to avoid the crowds there are other spots in the park to see it from that are not crowded!

THAT is amazing in photographs. I can't imagine how stellar it must have been to see it in person...

Funny; I had heard the term Firefall before, but I did;t understand the significance of it until now. Thanks for the insight!

Best wishes for Happiness, Health, and Prosperity in 2022!

Cheers!
