Now I just have to decide whether a repair is possible or whether I would rather invest the money in a new (used) lens. The lens has been with me since my first camera, which was a Nikon D7100 APC. Now I have a Nikon D750 full-frame, so a lens to match would be better. For example, a Tamron SP AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD. I'll have to take my time to think about what I really want to do. Thank you for your comment, it really touched me.
