Purple basil

I think purple basil is more than just a culinary herb. If you look at the rich colors while enjoying the aroma, this plant must be a botanical marvel. Not only its deep violet leaves but also the flowers offer a visual feast. Perhaps the most fascinating detail lies in the fine, pearl resembling tips.

Recently I bought a second hand 2x macro lens and practiced it with flowers at home. I must say up to 1x magnification it is easy to handle, but after this point I noticed that it is not just a snap! I had to learn about focus stacking. And most of the time this technique needs retouch of the photos. So after every build, I realized the importance of looking into pixels with a bit of patience. And the setup takes sometime as well.

So with this new lens I had the opportunity to admire its details and discover this rich plant.

As you know these tiny pollen grains, are the basis of the plant’s reproduction. Upon closer inspection, I thought of them resembling pearl-like droplets, nested among soft purple petals. It is so amazing to thinker about how this small scale is important for the ecosystem.

Maybe you also use this herb in the meals. The fragrance of purple basil is equally mesmerizing. A single shake against its leaves is enough for it to release a sweet, peppery aroma.
