My Cuban people have lived a long history of suffering, oppression and resilience. Through the decades, the struggle for our freedom and dignity has been a constant in the soul of Cubans, who have faced political, economic and social crises. In this scenario, street art has become a powerful voice for those of us who have no other way to express ourselves.
Graffiti, with its crudeness, has emerged as a form of collective outcry on the streets of Cuba. In every stroke, every color, there are hidden messages that reveal the pain, the rage, the resistance, and sometimes the hope of our people who do not give up. The walls of the city are transformed into canvases where street artists express their rejection of repression, the lack of rights, and the daily difficulties we face. It is a silent but impactful battle, where each work of art tells a story that the government would prefer not to be seen.
Graffiti art is more than just marks on walls; it is a tool of struggle that has given voice to those who feel forgotten. The broken hearts, faded faces and abstract figures that adorn deteriorating facades not only reflect the physical decay of buildings, but also the collective suffering that has marked generations. The word “free” written on a crumbling wall, or a heart pierced by nails, are symbols of a constant battle for dignity and freedom.
Each mural is a manifesto, a form of liberation from helplessness. It is a way of telling the world that, although the Cuban people have been hit, they have not been silenced.
