LessHorrible Photo - The Bunker

A few years ago, I set off on a train trip through France. I have just turned 20 and wanted to experience a country that is so close, but yet so far.

Paris was my first destination. After couchsurfing there for a couple of days, I set off to the Northern coast of France, one of the best decisions I ever made.

Northern France is very diverse. On the western end you have the enchanting Bretagne, with its rugged coast lines. You get a feeling that fairies may live here among the shrubs on the clips. Brittany is also famous for its food, being credited for fabulous cidre, gallettes and crepes.

The eastern part of northern France borders Belgium, and here you can find so much history. If you enjoy visiting bunkers and if you want to see the Atlantikwall, this is your destination.

In the centre you have the Normandy, known for being a decisive turning point in the last world war. However, Normandy is also incredibly beautiful. I was fortunate enough to return there last summer. It is a landscape that you have to see yourself.

Right between Normandy and Brittany is St Malo. An old pirate fortress turned walled city with picturesque narrow street and an incredible beach promenade. An hour away from the town itself is a plateau which is speckled with remnants of the second world war. This is where today's picture originated from. A German bunker overlooking the incredible scenery that is the French coast. Also a stark reminder of the scars that this massive conflict left in the landscape, but also in history. One can only hope that history does not repeat itself.
