Heavy Snowfall

We had one big snowstorm this December the other day. I was a bit worried about the internet connection, but it was okay. The snowstorm warning sounded pretty serious, and some public places decided to cancel events beforehand. However, I’ve experienced enough to know that snow warnings are sometimes too much, but sometimes true. That’s why it’s a bit difficult to predict how serious it will actually be. This time, I was hoping the internet connection would stay stable, but I knew the heavy snow would come anyway.

When I woke up the next day after the snowfall, the snow looked so heavy. Some of the trees on my property were bent down to the ground, and they looked so sad. I needed to save some of the trees because the snow was weighing them down. I noticed that some branches had broken on their own. I’m actually glad some branches were gone because I didn’t have the time or energy to trim them last fall. Nature is always clever.

We decided to ask our neighbour guys to do the snowplowing, as we usually do in winter. They are always quick and helpful. They came to our property very soon after we called this time as well. I appreciate that we didn’t need to shovel all that heavy snow ourselves.

I also met a few neighbours on that day. I felt relieved to have a little conversation after the snowstorm and make sure everyone was okay. I saw many snowplow trucks on the street when I went outside with my dog.

On another day, we also had a warning about cold temperatures. It said the temperature was -15, but it would feel like -20 because of the wind chill. No way! I didn’t want to feel -20… I dressed extra warmly that day, just like my dog. However, my area is surrounded by trees, so I didn’t feel the strong wind. I didn’t feel -20 at all. You see, the warning and the real situation are not always the same in every area. “Seeing is believing.”

We went to the forest with our dog. The restricted burning order and hiking ban had been lifted because the forest fire situation had settled down. I’m glad the people who had to evacuate were able to return to their homes. We also suffered from the dry weather, and our well completely dried up, as I wrote before. After drilling the new well, we are still waiting for the drinking water test results, even though we can use the water for daily life. The provincial government offered water tickets only in November, but we missed the support. I heard the program had already ended… They didn’t notify us, so we didn’t see the information on their website.

I’m glad to see the lake filled with water again, even though it’s frozen. It’s much better than seeing the water level so low. It was really hard to experience such dry weather last summer and fall. I don’t want to go through that again… but we never know with our unpredictable environment.

We have already started using our wood stove, but we have to be conservative with our firewood this winter. Last winter, we ran out of wood even though we ordered our usual amount. Last February and March were so cold. I hope this winter will be a little milder than last year.

大雪

１２月に入ってから、一度だけ大雪の日がありました。インターネット接続を少し心配していましたが、問題ありませんでした。大雪警報はかなり深刻な感じで、公の施設の中には事前にキャンセルを決めたところもありました。でも、これまでの経験から、雪の警報は大げさなときもあれば、本当に当たるときもあります。だから、本当にどれくらい深刻なのか予測するのは難しいのです。今回は、インターネットが無事であってほしいと思っていましたが、大雪はどうせやって来るだろうなと思って構えていました。

翌朝起きて外を見ると、雪がかなり重そうでした。家の敷地の木のいくつかは地面までしなるほど曲がっていて、とてもつらそうでした。雪の重みでしなっている木の雪を降ろして助けないといけませんでした。枝が折れてしまったものもありました。実は、昨秋に剪定する時間も体力もなかったので、いくつか枝がなくなったのはちょっと良かったとも思いました。自然はいつも賢いですね。

冬になるといつもお願いしているご近所さんに、今年も除雪を頼むことにしました。毎年とても素早く、助けてくれます。今回も電話したらすぐに来てくれて、とてもありがたかったです。あの重い雪を自分たちで雪かきしなくてよかったと思いました。

この日は、何人かのご近所さんにも会いました。大雪のあとに少し立ち話をして、みんな状況を聞いて無事だとわかると安心します。犬と外に出たときには、道に多くの除雪車が忙しそうに行き交っているのも見かけました。

また、別の日には冷え込みに関する警報も出ました。気温は −１５℃だけれど、風の影響で体感は ー２０℃になる、と書いてありました。いやいや、−２０℃なんて感じたくない…と思い、私はいつもより厚着をし、犬も同じく暖かくして出かけました。でも、私の住む場所は木々に囲まれているので、実際には −２０℃の寒さは感じませんでした。こうしてみると、やはり警報と実際の状況は住む地域によって全然違うのです。「百聞は一見にしかず」 です。

その日は、犬と森にも行きました。山火事のために出ていたハイキングや焚き火禁止令も解除されていました。山火事がおさまって、本当に良かったです。避難していた人たちも自宅に戻ることができたようです。以前書いたことがあるのですが、私たちの家の井戸も乾燥のせいで完全に水が枯れてしまっていたので、大変さを実感させられました。新しい井戸を掘ってからは生活用水としては使えていますが、飲み水としての検査結果をまだ待っている最中です。州政府は１１月にだけ給水チケットを配布していたらしいのですが、私たちはそのサポートを受け損ねました。告知も来なかったので、ウェブサイトの情報にも気づきませんでした。

凍ってはいますが、湖に水が戻っているのを見られて嬉しいです。水位が下がっていくのを見るよりずっと安心できます。去年の夏と秋の乾燥は本当に大変でした。もうあんな経験はしたくありません…でも、環境の変化は予測がつかないのが現実です。

我が家ではすでに薪ストーブを使い始めていますが、今年の冬は薪を大事に使わないといけません。去年の冬は、いつも通り注文した量でも足りなくなってしまい、２月と３月がものすごく寒かったのです。今年の冬は、去年より少しでも暖かくなるといいなと思っています。
