Happy Birthday Suriname

in Photography Lovers3 years ago (edited)

November 25th is officially Surinamese independence day. This year marks the 46th year since Suriname got out from under Dutch rule...

It's been a hell of ride... Some of which I obviously didn't experience myself.
I could write about the political, social and economic highs and lows but today I'd like to focus more on the positives.

It's been about 2 years since I've last been and I'm seriously missing the place I still (also) call home. The whole Covid situation has kept me away longer than I've wanted and longer than I feel is healthy 😁...

And since I'm focussing on the positive I'm going to be sharing something I've come to appreciate more and more since I've been living abroad.
Could be a case of "you don't you what you've got until it's gone" but I also think its a big shift in focus and on how I see the world. I left to go study when I was 19, I'm 34 now.
I liked photography but not on this level.. I've also traveled a lot more now and I think that helps you appreciate the uniqueness you have back home too.
If you see other cities you automatically compare (it's human nature) and you also realize what other cities/countries have (and the other way around)

The two things I've noticed the most about Suriname in terms of photography subjects are Architecture and Nature.
There is more, a lot more, the people, the food (real foodies know!😂😂😂)... But that's for other posts...below I'll share some of my favorite shots.

Architecture

The wooden inner city of Paramaribo is on the Unesco World Heritage list for good reason. Its buildings are a mix of Dutch design and local materials.

Nature

That's a broad concept isn't it?
Suriname has 93% Amazon rainforest!
This makes it one of the greenest countries, literally and figuratively 😂.
I've been lucky enough to have had many trips to the interior... And everytime I go I find something else to admire. Lately it's been a lot of serene rivers/creeks and surrounding rainforest (more landscape). My next mission is to see what kind of animals or insects I can find (and take pics of)

It was very hard for me to stop adding pictures 😂. I mean these are two broad concepts. But I also realize nobody wants to see 30 pics in a row 😁. So this is it for today!

As always if you have any questions of want to connect.. Hit me up below!

@tipu curate

Thank you kindly!

I did struggle a lot with which pictures I could use because there is so much more to show. Glad you like it though.

And thanks very much for the curation 🤗

Most enjoyable reading about the region, never having visited one learns through the lens and what you detail into a post.

Hope you get to where your heart wants to be soon.

Beautiful. Hope you can go home soon. We've just been put on the UK red list. Again. A new variant announced yesterday. I fear for our Christmas. The fourth wave is going to happen if it isn't already in this country.

Thank you!

Things are actually looking up. I've booked a ticket for December so I'm just hoping the number stay down so I can travel 🤞🏾

Sorry to hear about the new variant, I wonder how people will react this time, I'm sure everyone is tired of it all

They are. And we're getting tired of being redlined like it's our fault that we have clever people and a great surveillance system.

So glad you're going home! 🤞

Love to see green in the Amazon forest. It was really hard to see part of it was burnt 2 years ago. Congratulations on the independence day :)

Thank you!

Yeah that was tough to watch. But I really hoped it served as a reminder of what we need to do to preserve it 🤞🏾

Congratulations, and Happy independence day. Beautiful pics and great country. 😁

Thank you!
I tried to show a bit 😁.
Not too much so people don't get bored

Could be a case of "you don't you what you've got until it's gone" but it also think its a big shift in focus and on how I see the world.

That is an interesting part of the life. Sometimes we tend to value things after we lose them. Unfortunately I also experienced this myself personally.

True!
But there is a lesson in there somewhere right?

Maybe a push to appreciate what we have more, not in fear per se, but just because we still can.

My next mission is to see what kind of animals or insects I can find.

I would also like to get into that, because of the variety of species here... Most of the time I want to take my phone out for a photo though the animal's already gone 😂 and sometimes during nature walks I tend to forget.

Hahaha I don't think my phone is gonna cute it.. I feel like I might have to camp out somewhere with my zoom lens and see what happens 😁

I feel like I might have to camp out somewhere with my zoom lens and see what happens 😁

Or really go on those nature walks, like bird spotting, but then for insects? 🤷‍♀
I also enjoy watching eagles soaring in the sky, but my phone camera doesn't reach that far I think and most of the time I don't have my phone with me 😅.

Exactly! Nature walks would definitely work for insects... Birds also if you have a zoom lens... I'm up for it 😁

Hahaha when you're here then book those nature walks or wait a walk through Cultuurtuinlaan has enough material I suppose... Although, it's advisable to go with a group of people, especially if you're going to take pictures.

These are some great shots bro! Really impressive photography on display here.

Thank you!
I tried to show at least the 2 aspects and landscapes have been my favorite for a while now. Glad you approve 😀

Definitely! Great job showcasing the beauty. =)
