The current political situation is bad, but when I first got there, it was a good place (aside from the winters in the Prairie Provinces like Alberta), plenty of work and very liberal. The one place that attracted me was Vancouver Island, the capital of British Columbia,Victoria. But I only made it there on holidays (later on, property prices went through the roof and I could not transfer there from my job, because there were no openings).
I never intended to stay, just wanted to check it out for a year or so. Then I got 'stuck'. The good part about it, for me in hindsight, was the private pension I paid into, plus investments - and the fact that now I pay my taxes in Canada, where the taxrate is much lower than Austria.
