São Paulo is the largest city in the southern hemisphere, and just like in other megalopolises, many of its nooks can be damn rough. Choosing accommodation in a bad neighborhood, or even on the wrong street, could be a terrible rookie mistake. To avoid unpleasant surprises, we consulted a friend who lived in São Paulo for ten years for the best areas to stay. Vila Madalena was indeed a good choice—a relatively safe place. And no, I’m not referring to psychotherapy here.
Remember Francisco from my Saturday post? He lived in Vila Madalena until he moved to Europe with his parents at the age of seven. His grandparents still live in the same house. When I asked him about the crime rate in Vila Madalena, he didn’t sugarcoat it at all, shooting me down (that’s just a figure of speech, guys! Gun violence isn’t that common in Sao Paolo anymore.):
“Well, my grandma got robbed just in front of her house a few months ago. Yeah. These things still happen.”
I když... "No, babičku pár měsíců zpátky okradli přímo před domem. Takové věci se tu prostě dějí..."
They do, no doubt about that. That's why modern flat houses and condominiums are surrounded by walls topped with razor wire or electric fences to keep certain people off the property. These barriers are adorned with Christmas lights during the holidays, which grants them a creepy Tim Burton movie vibe. Without these decorations, they look a bit like luxury prisons with private pools, gardengrills, and gyms. Despite these measures, Vila Madalena is a good district with lively nightlife, and I felt safe discovering it. Besides, I have a soft spot for any place with a craft microbrewery, and the local one is worth a visit.
Vila Madalena hasn't always been like this, though. It used to boast a bohemian reputation, which originated in the 1970s when it became a students' hub, drawing undergraduates with affordable rents and its proximity to two universities. Over time, generations of students graduated, with many settling down here and igniting the neighborhood’s transformation into a more upscale area. Today, Vila Madalena is a blend of old and new, with traditional two-story houses like the one Francisco’s grandparents live in and modern skyscrapers—sometimes on the same street. Interestingly, many of these skyscrapers are narrow, occupying the same plots as the houses they replaced.
Moderní věžáky tu ale nejsou dlouho. V sedmdesátých letech minulého století začala být Vila Madalena bohémskou čtvrtí, levné nájmy a nedaleké univerzity sem totiž přilákaly davy studentů.
Vila Madalena is also known for its murals. While I’m no graffiti expert, I just shot the ones I liked. Murals often decorate stores, serving as creative shopping windows, but these felt more like advertisements than art.
For someone from Central Europe, walking through Vila Madalena feels like strolling through a botanical garden. I particularly admired how orchids are planted alongside young trees. I wonder if it's just a private initiative of some of the locals, or the city council's.
On the other hand, Brazilian cable management is unconventional, to say the least. Trees sometimes grow through the wires, and when they are cut down, parts of their trunks may remain entangled. In other cases, what I assume are unused wires dangle haphazardly.
Stromy nezřídkakdy rostou skrz, a když pak strom pokácejí, klidně nechají špalek zaklínění do kabelů, ať si tam shnije a odpadne. No, a občas tu kabely jen tak visí.

We had some neighbors who moved down to Brazil for his job when I was a kid. We never got the chance, but it would have been cool to have gone down and visited them. It looks like a beautiful area.
Well, if you really mean it, you can get a return flight to São Paulo for like $500 from various cities in the US, especially if you start watching the prices for say March, which is the end of the rain season, likely the best time for a visit.
Everything there is a bargain then - accommodation, eating out, even car rentals (although they are insane drivers, I'd ratger suggest taking an Uber for short distances and a bus for long trips).
That's actually a lot cheaper than I would have expected from Boston. I'd probably be flying out of Detroit.
Okey, $600-700 right now. I guess you might want to combine it - go to Rio and return from Sampa or vice versa. The domestic flights are rather cheap then, for like $50 between these two cities.
The 4* hotel prices on the screenshots are real, the good ones would be like $30-40 per night though.
Wow, that is pretty crazy! I can't even get a camping site in the US for that low of a price! I don't know as though I have ever stayed in a hotel that is rated more than two or three stars.
Not sure about the location, but just for inspiration. 4 nights with breakfast included for a couple, Sampa downtown in March. 8.1 of 10 from hundreds of reviewers, and just $100.
Brazil is cheap :)

That's insane!
I guess a 4* hotel in Brazil would be like 3* hotel somewhere in the US, but you can definitely get a great deal down there :)
Just do what we did - do your research before booking, you don't really want to end up in a bad neighbourhood ;)
Yes, that would not be good. My luck that is exactly where I would end up!

WOW, lots of Brazilian content, that's really cool! I'll keep an eye out to see them all! o/
Yep. I might visit Germany, and go skiing to Italy or someplace in the meanwhile, but the few upcoming weeks will be dedicated to this Brazilian trip mainly ;)
That's great, I'm glad you made the trip here! Next time you'll have to put the city of Goiânia (state of Goiás) on the route haha

The view of the city is so amazingly beautiful, I can see it and I really enjoy it❤️
Non generic comments would likely work better ;) I'm glad you really enjoyed it, though.
Murals are an important part of the decoration in Vila Madalena; several of them can be seen on the walls of buildings and walkways.
Greetings!
Oh, have you been there?
