Personally, when going around for pleasure, I always bring with me my D3200, as it is my "battlefield" camera: a good one, small but not professional. You can find some similar also of second hand without spending too much money. Instead, when I want to take good pics or when I work, I use my professional camera, the D500 which is expensive and heavy to carry around. You're absolutely right about the phone camera, but I am deeply convinced that a good eye can take advantage also from the lowest-quality kinda camera.
