Anzio Surfing Session | 22.10.23 [Eng-Ita]

Today I am back to share with the Hive community a series of pictures I took of a surfing session of some friends of mine.

A month ago we went to Anzio, a seaside location not far from Rome, as the waves forecast was very good; not only we found very food waves, but also the day was surprisingly hot almost like Summer. It was a typical "ottobrata romana", which stands for the sunny and warm days that occur towards the beginning of Fall, but still have the same vibes and temperature of the Summer days.

Camilla, former colleague and current very good friend of mine, involved me in the surfing world years ago, when we were still co-workers. We used to go surfing to Ostia, near Rome, right before our working shifts would start; early in the morning we would wake up just to take some good swell in the lovely and peaceful sea, even in Winter. It was a good period of my life!

At some point I stopped going to surf, for some random reasons; it wasn't something I wanted to stop, I guess life just happened. I started again to swim, I was to busy to work, and other life commitment, but I never stopped loving this sport.

I haven't been surfing in a while now, but Camilla always invites me whenever she decides to go and surf, together with her boyfriend and another couple of friends. This time, I wanted to go with them even just to stay in the sun by the beach and enjoy some beach vibes. What better occasion to take some good shots?!

Camilla learnt how to surf when she was studying abroad in San Diego, California, years ago. She went there and fell in love with this sport, so much so that when she was back in Rome, she wanted to keep practicing it.

She found a small school called Ostia Surf, in Ostia, where she was able to improve a lot thanks to the skills and knowledge of the instructors. At that time, Ostia Surf school was still very small, but ever since was very good, as the founder, Valentina Vitale, was the first Italian woman surfer and won several important championships worldwide; her co-founder and friend Alessandro Clinco was also a former professional surfer and the two of them were able to fund and grow a great surfing school and movement that spread in the seaside of Rome.

Because in Italy the sea is pretty enclosed and we do not have much bigger open sea, it is quite difficult to find high waves; however, we still have some very good spots, especially in Sardinia, Tuscany, and, closer to Rome, Santa Marinella and Gaeta.

In Ostia the conditions are always pretty hard to surf, as it is often windy and there is always a lot of current in the water, which makes it difficult for surfers, especially beginners, to paddle back to the line up. However, because of these hard conditions, if one can manage to learn to surf in Ostia, he/she is very likely to be able to surf anywhere.

At the beginning, Camilla and I would go and surf to Ostia as that was the first and only spot she knew about, where we could surf and rent boards and wetsuits; later one, also thanks to her boyfriend, Camilla discover much better spots even around Rome, which is the reason why this photo-session was taken in Anzio.

Camilla's boyfriend's cousin owns a motor caravan, which allows him to basically stay overnight in the surfing spots. Indeed, we reached him where he slept and "opened up" the surfing ball early in the morning on that Saturday of October. He sent us some good pictures at 7am, when he was going into the water for a early surfing session: the sea was perfect, the waves long and clean. Perfect conditions for a great sesh!

As Camilla and I arrived with her friend Federica, we saw Lucio still into the water; but the waves got worse, and there were already too many people. So after a while in that spot, the guys decided to change and we moved with the cars towards another beach, 5 minutes away from there.

Changing spot was the best idea as we found a better sea, with better waves, and less people surfing. Indeed, the problem when a spot becomes too popular is that beginners, amateurs, and professionals surf all in the same portion of water, and the situation can become very dangerous for everybody, especially for beginners but not only.

I had fun watching them taking the waves, one after the other, and capturing the moments with my camera. Unfortunately I did not have with me my professional camera nor a big zoom lens, so the quality of the shots is not super good. However, I really hope you would enjoy this photoshoot anyway!

After the long session, a well-deserved break and lunch in the sun, on the shore, was just what we needed! We enjoyed the small talks, the food, and the unfailing "moka" coffee thanks to Lucio's small portable hotplate. And the day was definitely perfect!

Oggi torno a condividere con la community di Hive una serie di foto che ho scattato durante una sessione di surf di alcuni miei amici.

Un mese fa siamo stati ad Anzio, località balneare non lontana da Roma, poiché la previsione delle onde era molto buona; non solo abbiamo trovato buone onde, ma anche la giornata era sorprendentemente calda quasi come fosse ancora estate. Era una tipica "ottobrata romana", che sono le giornate soleggiate e calde che si verificano verso l'inizio dell'autunno, ma che hanno ancora le stesse vibrazioni e temperature delle giornate estive.

Camilla, ex collega e attuale mia carissima amica, mi ha coinvolto nel mondo del surf anni fa, quando eravamo ancora colleghe. Andavamo a fare surf a Ostia, vicino Roma, poco prima che iniziassero i nostri turni di lavoro; la mattina presto ci svegliavamo solo per prendere un po' di belle onde nel mare bello e tranquillo, anche in inverno. È stato un bel periodo della mia vita!

Ad un certo punto ho smesso di andare a surfare, per qualche motivo casuale; non era qualcosa che volevo smettere di fare, immagino che la vita abbia semplicemente fatto il suo corso. Avevo ripreso a nuotare, ero troppo impegnato con il lavoro e altri impegni di vita, ma non ho mai smesso di amare questo sport.

È da un po' che non surfo, ma Camilla mi invita sempre ogni volta che decide di andare a surfare, insieme al suo ragazzo e ad un'altra coppia di amici. Questa volta volevo andare con loro anche solo per stare al sole in spiaggia e godermi un po' di atmosfera da mare. Quale occasione migliore per fare qualche bello scatto?!

Camilla ha imparato a fare surf mentre studiava all'estero a San Diego, in California, anni fa. Lei andò lì e si innamorò di questo sport, tanto che una volta tornata a Roma, volle continuare a praticarlo.

Ha trovato una piccola scuola chiamata Ostia Surf, a Ostia, dove ha potuto migliorare molto grazie alle capacità e conoscenze degli istruttori. A quel tempo, la scuola Ostia Surf era ancora molto piccola, ma da allora era molto valida, poiché la fondatrice, Valentina Vitale, fu la prima donna surfista italiana e vinse diversi campionati importanti a livello mondiale; anche il suo co-fondatore e amico Alessandro Clinco era un ex surfista professionista e loro due furono in grado di fondare e far crescere una grande scuola e movimento di surf che si diffuse nelle località di mare limitrofe a Roma.

Poiché in Italia il mare è piuttosto chiuso e non abbiamo un mare aperto molto grande, è abbastanza difficile trovare onde alte; tuttavia, abbiamo comunque degli ottimi spot, soprattutto in Sardegna, Toscana e, più vicino a Roma, Santa Marinella e Gaeta.

A Ostia le condizioni sono sempre piuttosto difficili per surfare, in quanto c'è spesso vento e c'è sempre molta corrente in acqua, il che rende difficile ai surfisti, soprattutto ai principianti, remare indietro verso la line up. Tuttavia, a causa di queste condizioni difficili, se uno riesce a imparare a fare surf a Ostia, è molto probabile che riuscirà a fare surf ovunque.

All'inizio io e Camilla andavamo a fare surf a Ostia perché quello era il primo e unico spot che conosceva, dove potevamo surfare e noleggiare tavole e mute; in seguito, anche grazie al suo fidanzato, Camilla scoprì posti decisamente migliori anche nei dintorni di Roma, motivo per cui questo servizio fotografico è stato scattato ad Anzio.

Il cugino del fidanzato di Camilla possiede un camper, che gli permette praticamente di pernottare negli spot di surf. Infatti, lo abbiamo raggiunto dove dormiva e ha "aperto" le danze del surf la mattina presto di quel sabato di ottobre. Ci ha mandato delle belle foto alle 7 del mattino, mentre stava entrando in acqua per una sessione di surf mattutina: il mare era perfetto, le onde lunghe e pulite. Condizioni perfette per una fantastica sesh!

Appena arrivate io e Camilla con la sua amica Federica, abbiamo visto Lucio ancora in acqua; ma le onde peggioravano, e c'era già troppa gente. Così dopo un po' in quel punto i ragazzi hanno deciso di cambiare e ci siamo spostati con le macchine verso un'altra spiaggia, a 5 minuti da lì.

Cambiare spot è stata l'idea migliore perché abbiamo trovato un mare migliore, con onde migliori e meno gente che surfava. Infatti, il problema quando uno spot diventa troppo popolare è che principianti, amatori e professionisti surfano tutti nella stessa porzione d'acqua, e la situazione può diventare molto pericolosa per tutti, soprattutto per i principianti ma non solo.

Mi sono divertita a guardarli prendere le onde, uno dopo l'altro, e catturare i momenti con la mia macchina fotografica. Purtroppo non avevo con me la mia macchina fotografica professionale né un grande obiettivo zoom, quindi la qualità degli scatti non è eccelsa. Tuttavia, spero davvero che questo servizio fotografico vi piaccia comunque!

Dopo la lunga sessione, una meritata pausa e il pranzo al sole, in riva, era proprio quello di cui avevamo bisogno! Ci siamo goduti le chiacchiere, il cibo e l'immancabile caffè della moka grazie alla piccola piastra portatile di Lucio. E la giornata era decisamente perfetta!
