Last week, I ordered the Canon 17mm f/4 Tilt Shift lens and it came in the mail today. I have been getting more into architectural work and have had a few clients let me take some photos for them. During my first shoot, I noticed that I had to spend a lot of time getting the lines right in post because my 24mm lens was wide and distorted the images.

Well, with a tilt shift lens, you can line everything up before you even take the shot. Tilt shifts are a bit weird because you can move the lens elements around and essentially change the focal planes. They can also be used to create some really cool effects and make everything look like a miniature city. I will have to try and do that one day, but to make things look miniature, it is best if you are up higher than what you are shooting.

The area I live is pretty much the new Silicone Valley in the US, so there are a lot of really cool architecture because these companies really want their buildings to stand out. They are the perfect buildings to practice on. It was really bright outside and the sun was up in the middle of the sky, which is one of the worst times to go out and take photos.

One thing you can do to make your photos look better when the lighting isn't that great is to shoot HDR. To do this, you need a camera that has exposure bracketing. When you use exposure bracketing, your camera takes a series of photos at different exposures. It takes photos at normal exposure, then under exposed and over exposed. Then I merged the three images I took in Lightroom and it gives me a final image that has all the information from the whites and blacks. It basically expands the dynamic range of your camera allowing you to get a lot more information to work with in post production. One thing to be careful with is to not overdo the HDR look because you can really make your images look dumb with too much HDR editing.

Overall, it was a pretty good experience with the lens today. It does take a lot longer to shoot with this lens because there is a lot more manual adjustments that need to be done, but the end result is way better than with my normal lenses. I can't wait to get back out there and continue to learn more about this type of photography.

Dope shots. Always nice to have a new lens I’m sure. This place reminds me of the Battlefield 2042 map called Renewal.

LOL, that is awesome. I hated that map so much. I would get killed so many times trying to get into the building. I wonder if that game is any better than it used to be.

I just tried the newest map a few hours ago… game doesn’t feel much different. So much death and so many vehicles. It’s definitely playable, but not the greatest FPS ever.

Ya, this one was a pretty big let down.

Don’t even get me started… so many games have been letting me down here lately. I was extremely pumped to finally get a new Saints Row… after finishing 75% of the latest game… it just feels so watered down. Like how do you screw up something so badly that was once so great. Luckily we can still trust games such as God of War to release in good condition, but so many just feel rushed or they just have the wrong idea of what the game should be like.

Ya, I was looking forward to Saints Row, but saw how bad it was. I will probably wait until its either on GamePass soon or like $10.

As far as GoW, it is going to be so cool. I have never been let down by a GoW game.

It’s cool for a bit, but I can’t force myself to finish. 100% not worth $60. It’ll be dirt cheap or added to one of the monthly subscriptions soon I’m sure.

Dude, you were born for this. Even without the right light, these photos are amazing. I love the reflection of the clouds off the buildings. Looking forward to your next post.

Thanks man. I have been learning a lot about this type of photography and it is nice to see it all coming together to make something cool looking.

Bro, wtf! These are awesome! Can you tweak angles and stuff in the RAW files? You gotta show me later when I get back from Paris.

Thanks man. Ya, I can adjust the angles and stuff in Lightroom, but with the tilt shift, I can adjust all of that before I even take the picture, so there is a lot less tweaking in post now, which keeps me from losing out on pixels.

Shots like this make me want to up my photography game to a dslr or at least gen an iPhone. Well done!

Thanks. You really should get a camera and try learning some photography skills.

Very cool perspective, I think you are very good at photography. So beautiful and so special.

Thank you

Awesome shots!! They look like graphics you can create in a game or in 3d. 😅
Haven't heard about tilt shift lens before. I bet they are so expensive 😏

Ya, the one I got was $2500, but it was worth it. There is so much you can do with these.

Those are some wonderful shots. Though I love taking photos but I still don't know how to capture a wonderful photo and I think seeing photos like these made me inspired to explore more about photography.

It is a lot of practice. You just need to go out and take pictures and learn from everything you do.

Thank you so much for the advice. I'll do that.

Those pictures look great, I've heard of tilt shift lens's but I've never used them. I think something like that would be great for the arsenal. Especially when you mentioned being able to get miniature type photos, I'm looking where I live since there are a lot of hills. So I might be able to do some interesting stuff with it. I'm going to look into them.

!PIZZA

Thanks man. Tilt shifts can be a lot of fun. They can do some pretty cool things.

Really impressive work, I must say. Nice shots. These are some of the photos that, when I see them, inspire me to want to pursue a career in photography. Thanks for sharing

Thanks man. If you are interested in photography, just get out there and start practicing.

I will, thanks

Bro!!! That is some real deal OG lens~ That is so cool!! Its like every shot can be a desktop wallpaper. Imma gonna check that lens out. Thanks for sharing man!

Thanks man. Looking forward to using this lens a lot more in the future.

Wow… looks great. You will have fun practicing and experimenting with the new lens.
I never shot with a tilt shift lens. Sounds just perfect for architecture shoots.
I normally edit my photos to get the lines better.
Great captures @derangedvisions 😎

What camera do you use?

Thanks. I use a Canon 5D MarkIV. I've been looking at getting a new camera and having this one as my backup.

You are welcome 😊
I’m looking around too.
My Canon 550D (I had that one for a long time… with the right lenses it was good for than) died on my last trip to Cuba in 2019 due to no travel and the pandemic I haven’t replaced it yet. I’m looking for something light again. Due to back problems and I shoot handheld.
Not sure what way to go or even mirror less.
Now our first far away holiday is approaching… end of September to the US… I get this urge hahaha 🤣
Just having my iPhone is soooo 😣 you know what I mean. Lol

Hopefully you can get a new camera soon. The new iPhones take some good photos, but they don't even compare to a dlsr.

Thanks 🙏🏻
I sooo know. The times that something amazing happened or I saw… and only had my phone… hahaha too many times in the last years.
I have a move coming up Monday. After that I probably will have a closer look around what’s new and out there.

It looks like a happy deal. Very impressive, love the results.
!PIZZA to celebrate a new toy in your arsenal.

Thanks man. I actually had pizza for lunch and it was delicious

but this is hive pizza .. it is a different case 😀

Too bad I can't eat it. Real pizza is better

PIZZA!

Thanks. What lens are you looking at purchasing?

If you use Canon, I recommend the 100mm f/2.8 macro. It is super sharp and not too expensive. Plus it works great for portraits.
