I would take at least one power bank with me in case the smartphone battery runs out. I've never had any problems with a flat battery myself, but you never know.
The advantage, on the other hand, is that you can place the lamp somewhere in the set and control it from your smartphone. That could be quite useful.
I have an old smartphone and battery can be an issue. But an external battery can help for sure.
Sometimes I go to explore without my phone as it localizes me anytime (and it can be hazardous to leave "tracks"). In general, I don't like to depend on technology in lightpainting, especially when it involves a smartphone. You can call me old-fashionned^^
No, quite the opposite! It's not old-fashioned! I use discarded smartphones without a card for my DIY tools, anonymized if possible. I think that would be an option.
