Chatsworth House - Burning Man exhibition

Yesterday was Saturday. After a hectic week at work it was finally the weekend... but I didn't have a great deal planned (except ironing, and I hate doing the ironing). Fortunately my parents phoned up:

would you like to come with us to Chatsworth House today?

erm... I'm not really fussed about these stately home places...

yeah yeah we know, but its got some sculpture event happening, we thought you might find it interesting?

oh ok then. I don't actually have anything else to do, and its an opportunity for fresh air at least!

So they came and picked me up and we drove the 2 hours to get to get to Chatsworth House, which is somewhere near Chesterfield in Derbyshire

And then when we finally arrived, I saw this striking and strangely familiar sculpture

Wait a minute... I've seen this somewhere before

More specifically, I've seen this on HIVE somewhere. A quick look through recent posts by some of the accounts I follow, revealed that it was a Post by @ellenripley who wrote about this nearly a month ago

Suddenlu I was intrigued, there were some decent pictures on that article... perhaps this might be interesting after all!

Reading the plaque nearby I think its something to do with Books (flying out of their head) which fuels imagination and creativity.

Some sort of flying Pegasus horse thing? Thats pretty cool... and its mechanical too, so the wings move up and down and the legs move

Oh wow, giant metal Moth sculptures, moths are flippin' cool, so these are flippin' cool too!

Check out the detail on these... can you imagine if Moths were actually this size in real life? That would be awesome (and terrifying!)

Quick pause from admiring the terrifying insects, to watch these Fallow Deer grazing over near the trees. Many large Estates like Chatsworth also have their own resident Deer populations (I guess from the days they used to hunt them). They might still hunt them actually... Chatsworth is still a working estate, not just a tourist destination...

You can more evidence of that here, there were huge piles (rows? stacks?) of recently cut down trees, and there were sheep grazing nearby too...

Anyway, back to massive and bizzare sculptures, such as the fuselage of this plane being used as part of a flower (I think thats what it is). Some of the creativity of all of these artists is amazing!

Yes... I do think this is a flower... I think....

Another pause... I spotted this gorgeous Mandarin Duck, over the other side of the field, what amazing colours he has! I have never seen one of these before. They are not native to the UK, but have been introduced and naturalised (which means they have adapted to our climate etc)

With that bright pink colour, its pretty hard to miss this one!

Apparently it is a creation based on Mexican folk art, and is an imaginary creature created from various parts of other animals such as Antlers from a Deer, and Hooves from a Horse

And now we come to my favorite of these sculptures: A mother Bear and her Cub.

Its the wildlife nut in me, the natural world is amazing and will always be more interesting than any fictional made up stuff

Hats off to the artists on this one, who could imagine that a lump of concrete with some coins stuck in it could look so flippin' lifelike?

So, is this place worth visiting?

Er yes I think so, as long as you don't mind a fair bit of walking. Yes you have to pay extra to go in the house and the formal gardens, but the surrounding estate is free.

I think for just a Fiver (for car parking) it is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon, especially while these sculptures are there.
