Reflections on Dog Lake

One fine August evening we had the pleasure of being the only humans at Dog Lake. On such a calm day nothing was disturbing its glass-like surface. The lake is the treat at the end of a 2.6 kilometer hike from a campground in Kootenay National Park.

The water projects almost a perfect upside-down image of Mount Harkin and its 2979 meter peak. This mountain range is part of the Canadian Rockies and it's western slopes help feed the lake.

Dog Lake is marshy near its ends, I imagine it's not very deep but one can still catch the reflection. This still water eventually makes its way into the raging Kootenay river which winds its way through the mountains until later joining up with the Columbia river and finally spilling into the Pacific Ocean.

The solitude of this place is magical, for a Saturday night in the Summer not much was happening on the shores. It was our third hike of the day and we were tired after walking over twenty kilometers so sitting by the lake was ideal.

With the sun slowing setting behind us over a 200 meter hill we had the best lighting to capture the reflection. It would be nice to find such a calm lake with the mountains on the West side to get the sunset in such photos so we continue to explore.

Of the four national parks in the area including Banff, Jasper and Yoho, Kootenay is the least popular. There is the famous Radium Hot Springs and a few notable trails. We will be back again to do some of the many other hikes to continue our journey of discovery. Thank you for reading.
