Here's a kid who lives with its herd high up above the town of Canmore, Alberta. If you're ever in the area, drive up the road to Spray Lake and you may often find goats hanging out by the Grassi Lakes or Ha Ling trail.
A kid is a young goat, they're super cute when young but don't necessarily age well. The picture above was taken with an iphone 15 pro in portrait mode. One can say this kid is striking a pose.
Here's the adult goats, not so attractive, they can stand on almost vertical slopes and enjoy licking rocks. These goats are shaggy as they are losing their thick white winter coats and the scraggly brownish summer coats are coming in.
Look at the hooves, these beasts are excellent climbers. They ignored us and kept licking the rocks.
Here's a younger goat whose horns are just popping out. This was also taken in a mountain pass near the town of Radium BC, another place one often sees mountain goats.
They live in small hers and like licking rocks which is why we find them next to roads. Sometimes in the winter salt, pickle juice or sand is dumped on the hills to get rid of the ice and create traction for cars. The goats sure don't mind.
We were lucky the goats were hanging out in a parking lot off to the side of the road as one should not stop on a hill or the shoulder of a road on a hill to take photos. When driving through Banff or Kananaskis, seeing wildlife is half the fun.
Thanks for viewing!
The last two photos were taken with a samsung 24, all the others were taken with an iphone 15 pro, these photos were all taken by us and are of wild goats.
Pretty sure those are wild sheep, closely related to goats. The unforgiving terrain and candid, almost intimate feeling of the pics is remarkable. You must be in excellent shape and very experienced in traversing rough ground.
For reference, this is a pic of a Rocky Mountain Goat (Oreamnos americanus) nanny and her kid.
Thanks!
Edit: upon checking I believe the animals in your pics are Bighorn Sheep (Ovis canadensis), which are discussed <a href="https://www.bighorninstitute.org/wild-sheep-of-north-america>here.
You're right!
Amazing photos but the first one is more adorable than the second one,😍😍
Thanks, the first and second photo are the same animal
