Hello HIVEs!
Last night Hans Roufflair, @stepko, Geane and I visited the Externsteine to try out a new tool. The tool is a star tracker. @lichtkunstfoto was kind enough to make one for each of us. The aim was to photograph the Milky Way.
Letzte Nacht besuchten Hans Roufflair, @stepko, Geane und ich die Externsteine, um ein neues Tool auszuprobieren. Bei dem Tool handelt es sich um ein Startracker. @lichtkunstfoto war so nett, jeden von uns solch ein Teil anzufertigen. Ziel war es, die Milchstraße abzulichten.

The Externsteine are a towering sandstone rock formation around 40 meters high. They are located in the town of Horn-Bad Meinberg in the district of Lippe in North Rhine-Westphalia. The rocks are among the most famous natural monuments in Germany and are considered to have special cultural and historical significance.
Die Externsteine sind eine rund 40 Meter hoch aufragende Sandstein-Felsformation. Sie liegen im Gebiet der Stadt Horn-Bad Meinberg im Kreis Lippe in Nordrhein-Westfalen. Die Felsen zählen zu den bekanntesten Naturdenkmälern Deutschlands und Ihnen werden besondere kulturgeschichtliche Bedeutungen zugeschrieben.

Unfortunately, the place is completely unsuitable for light painting. Too many people wander around here at night with their flashlights. An esoteric self-help group claimed a rock all to themselves and entertained us with didgeridoo, flute and chanting. It almost seems as if this place is busier at night than Alexanderplatz in Berlin. We were here once and made the most of it. 🤨
Leider ist der Platz für ein Lightpainting völlig ungeeignet. Zu viele Menschen wandern hier Nachts mit ihren Taschenlampen durchs Bild. Eine esoterische Selbsthilfegruppe beanspruchte einen Felsen ganz für sich und beschallte uns mit Didgeridoo, Flöte und Gesangsgedudel. Es scheint fast so, als würde dieser Platz nachts stärker frequentiert, als der Berliner Alexanderplatz. Jetzt waren wir einmal hier und machten das Beste daraus. 🤨

To bridge the time until the Milky Way became visible, I had the camera rotated. We have practiced this and it almost always produces interesting images 😉
First I tried a few 180° rotations. Not an easy undertaking! As you can see in the following picture, I had to cover the lens from time to time because visitors were shining their flashlights into the picture.
Um die Zeit bis zur Sichtbarkeit der Milchstraße zu überbrücken, ließ ich die Kamera rotieren. Darin haben wir Übung und es entstehen fast immer interessante Bilder. 😉
Zuerst versuchte ich einige 180°-Rotationen. Kein einfaches Unterfangen! Wie man auf dem folgenden Bild erkennen kann, mußte ich das Objektiv zwischendurch immer wieder abdecken, weil Besucher mit ihren Taschenlampen ins Bild leuchteten.

I had a bit more luck with the next picture. No disturbing light influences from other light sources.
Beim nächsten Bild hatte ich etwas mehr Glück. Keine störenden Lichteinflüsse fremder Lichtquellen.

Then I tried to create a pattern using a 90° rotation. The whole thing looks very abstract. However, the striking rocks in the middle of the Externsteine are still very easy to recognize.
Danach versuchte ich ein Muster durch eine 90°-Rotation zu erzeugen. Das Ganze wirkt sehr abstrakt. Die markanten Felsen in der Mitte der Externsteine sind jedoch noch sehr gut zu erkennen.

Then I repeated a 180° rotation with an inclination of 30°.
Dann wiederholte ich eine 180°-Rotation mit einer Neigung von 30°.

At last! After 9 p.m., the last clouds in the sky cleared and the stars became visible. The real work could begin. Switch on the start tracker, align it, mount the camera, align it and start recording. Unfortunately, that's not the end of the story. Unlike light painting, star photography requires a lot of post-processing on the computer. I have very little practice in this.
That's why I won't be able to post the pictures on my blog until next Sunday. I will then describe the creation process in detail. So stay tuned!
Endlich! Nach 21:00 Uhr lösten sich die letzten Wolken am Himmel auf und die Sterne wurden sichtbar. Die eigentliche Arbeit konnte beginnen. Startracker einschalten, ausrichten, Kamera montieren, ausrichten und die Aufnahme starten. Leider ist es damit nicht getan. Anders als ein Lightpainting, erfordert die Sternfotografie noch sehr viel Nacharbeit am Computer. Darin habe ich sehr wenig Übung. Deshalb werde ich die Bilder erst am nächsten Sonntag in meinem Blog posten können. Ich werde den Entstehungsprozess dann genau beschreiben. Also bleibt dran!

What Is Light Painting?
Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.
Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.

Ich bin gespannt auf die gestackten Bilder.
Schade, dass da nachts so viel los war. Das ist wahrscheinlich eher was für den Winter. Bei 3°C sitzen die Esoteriker wahrscheinlich lieber vor dem Kamin.
