Posing?

In photography, the most important thing is light (or lack of it), and how to manipulate it. After that, for me, is the exposure triangle. You can make great photos on Automatic, Program... but you need to understand the relationship between Aperture, Shutter speed and ISO.

Next if you go into people photography, is posing. There is a whole "science" about posing. And a lot of different opinions, but also some things that everyone is agreeing.

Try to get some separation of arms and the body. If the hand is just strait connected to the body the person always looks larger. Try to pay attention to fingers that should not be strait and stiff, don't cut the photo on joints, try to get curves, try to avoid 90 degrees angles...

There are thousands of videos and blogs about posing and you can learn something from every one of them, and there will be a lot of different approaches to it. And you can watch all of that and it all falls into the water if you don't practice it.

I started my photography with live events, so i was always waiting for the right moment to happen. Portraits are something i stumbled into. And i am not doing them often enough. So i always struggled with posing.

Especially when everything is happening fast and when you should rely on the "muscle memory". But muscle memory is trained. And i feel the difference when i do several shoots in a month, and when i don't do one in few months.

One thing that i actually like in this place is, not that complicated one light setup, almost everywhere. Most of the celling is white, there is a big white cloth on the wall next to the dark gray wall, and another big white wall.

There is nothing better than a big white wall to bounce your flash of, if you don't have a big nice light modifiers.

And i mostly do one light setup for these quick shoots on location. I should do few of them where i take tame to set up several light, with background light, and kicker light.

You really know how to photograph people, great shots mate! :)

@tip curate

Thanks :)

Posing is a science I don't possess :)

I have done a few portraits but apart from a couple of brilliant exceptions, nothing to be proud of!

I like your setup. Simple but classic, can't fail with that :)

The key is to demonstrate the poses yourself. It is even more hilarious if you're directing and glamour shoot, or an elegant bride, and you're a 6 foot 4 bearded man like me, trying to make myself angular and "s" shaped to look like a stunning runway model.

It always gets laughs, and I never get onto the actual runway.

Not that I'd want to, anyhoo...

And I always asked myself how such photos are obtained... a good model dances through a series of shots - then good photos are obtained, was my guess.... but it turns out that good hints and instructions are the real key?! 😜

Oh, absolutely; there's real model training, and for photographers who do not expect this "creature" of modelling, who they themselves have also studied the fine arts and know about what works in an image against what doesn't; is a complete different beast entirely.

Today I educated myself abit more about the real world, which is a good thing 😏

It is a fantastic feeling. :)

especially if you try to demonstrate something to someone in high heels and you are not even sure if that can be done :D

The pain of this is real. My mortality rate for shoes is luckily zero, but I'm sure if I tried to wear some heels, I would certainly break them.

i think i don't even understand the concept of it. a lot of the times when i try to explain something they look at me "how the f you think i can do that" :)

The same thing happens at the physiotherapist, or the gym. "Contort your body like this"

Excuse me, what?

Yeah, it's really easy, just...

Blank Stare

:D

yap, it always feels like an up hill battle :D

Lindsay Adler's book on posing changed my abilities overnight after I read it. I keep reading it every now and then.

I also spend so much time looking at paintings to get posing ideas.

watched some of her videos (few creative live episodes), she is good at it. going back to it from time to time helps for sure.

I agree posing can be hard, particular once you are in the middle of it. I try for natural ways in which people stand or sit and then just make minor adjustments to start. That often leads into me having more ideas. I also find that movement seems to make for a natural look. It's fun to work with someone who has done a bit of modeling before and watch out they move and interact with the camera. So much more fun than static poses for me.

working with someone who is comfortable in front of the camera and knows what is going on is like a cheat code :D

movement helps go get it look more natural.

Colours turned out quite delicate and balanced; #6 was my fave in this set.
(And thanks for all the tips. I do not shoot staged photos with models, but curious to educate myself about the basics).
!BEER

thanks, i like the dark gray (black) wall, could have done more with that.

Pretty cool photos! I like to see good people photography, but for me nature and wildlife are everything I need. Get me birds, mammals and reptiles posing and I'll be fine! ;) !BEER

i often joke that i live in one of the most non threatening places on earth. the most dangerous animal we have is badger, next in line is a fox. and in nature, everything is flat, no chance of floods, earthquakes, super crazy winds... so most of the time i pick people for my photos 😁

Ahahaha well, those are valid points! :)

These are some quality tips to accompany some super high quality shots! You are right, you need to do more portraits. These all turned out beautifully! Thanks for sharing with us.

Thanks. i should :)

I see this was a very important event and you just made it memorable. The shots are excellent as always. I've never done portraits, but I can feel your pain as there's a lot to pay attention to, plus the model also has to work with you, charm the camera. 👌 👍

getting comfortable in front of the camera is half of it. but for me i usually need more time, and it is probably because i don't do it often enough

Sometimes I don’t even know how to poss for a picture, hahaha
Nice content, keep it up

i never know how to pose for a picture, that is probably why i always end up behind the camera :)

Yep, me too
