Simple Joys That Endure.

in The MINIMALIST2 days ago (edited)

The holidays are usually fun by default; the buzz, the jubilation, trying new places and meeting new faces. But most of the time, it leaves me drained. After the fireworks and grateful cheers from last night faded into this morning’s quiet calm, a space opened for deep reflection.

I'll be sharing five simple things in my space that feel essential to my peace. Nothing fancy, just the basics that matter.

First, my black journal. I got it last year when my best friend, whom I'd lost touch with, suggested we write down the parts of our lives we’d missed and exchange said journals on specific days. On second thought, we realized exchanging journals wasn’t the way to go and consistent contact was better. So, I turned it into a personal journal.

The timing was perfect. Around then, someone I deeply respect highlighted the power of journaling and revisiting the things we write down. Now, writing down my subtle and not-so-subtle thoughts brings real calm.

Next, the cushion tucked in the corner of my room just behind the door. It is in a concealed spot where one can blend right into the surroundings. It is a red coloured cushion fresh from the repair shop courtesy of its wonky legs.

Sitting there has become one of my favourite things to do. A sense of calm envelops me whether I'm reading on the cushion or just scrolling through my phone. The best part? It's close to a source of natural breeze making sitting there pure bliss. (Pun intended :)

Then there’s the blue and pink skipping rope hanging on an old nail. A dear friend gifted it to me last year when I mentioned wanting to skip more often. It is now part of my weekly routine. Yes, it gets my heart racing, but a deep calmness follows.

Next up is my makeshift bookshelf. I made it a point to gather and arrange my old books, including educational ones. It's nothing fancy but it gets the job done effectively. It feels good whenever I walk up to the bookshelf, pick up a book and reread it for the umpteenth time. Currently I'm reading a paperback book with the title “If you build it, that will come”.

Finally, my comfy indoor flip-flops with soft soles. They keep my feet warm and clean. This pair of gems were also a thoughtful gift from my beloved sister and each time I wear them, they feel like warm hugs.

These are some things that still remain after the noise has been stripped away, and in their little and quiet ways, they all make staying in my space something I truly look forward to.
