Yes, I find running things against the "joy question" is a much better way of keeping track of your "minimalism". I believe it gives you the freedom to keep a collection of things that make you happy, but it's also a way to keep yourself in check about whether things are really worth keeping if you continue to ask the question about your possessions.
hehehehe i think my hubby is the same as you! He surrounds himself with clutter LOL I surround myself with DECLUTTER. hahahaha
