A little spark to (re)light the fire!

First off, I want to thank @dreemsteem for inspiring me to do some more posting on here. I've already been getting the itch to be more active on Hive, but having someone else encourage it makes me that much more excited for it. With that said, on with the show (sorta literally)!

My wife and I recently watched the first season of "Ugliest House in America" on HGTV. The host of the show, Retta, visits houses declaring to be, you guessed it, the ugliest house in America. Retta picks one house from the three visited in each episode's region of the US to be entered in the finals. The winner of the final decision for the ugliest house gets a $150,000 renovation thanks to HGTV.

Retta2.jpg

The young lady who won the first season for this show got such an amazing renovation, and it's really inspired me since. The owner of the house told the designer (Alison Victoria) that she had a preference for mid-century design and the way they pulled off converting the rundown brothel (literally) was fantastic.

Before.png

As you can see, the house is looking a bit rough to start out. Between what you can see in this image, and the things you can't (like CCTV cameras all throughout the house), it was definitely needing some work. Fortunately, as I said, the renovating and updating went very, very well:

After.png

Without thinking about it, the Mid-Century Modern aesthetic has been making its way into my tastes as my favorite design style for years. Seeing this renovation get done, and looking at how clean and organized everything is, I got so excited for getting my family in our own house that we could give this kind of treatment to. Because my kids were homeschooled until just a few years ago, we are trying to be patient and wait to get a house in another two-to-four years so at least one of them can finish high school where we are currently living. Our area is pretty expensive, and we want something big enough for our current family of five, and one more child. But that's a story for another post.

I grew up in a rather messy house where my mom wouldn't even force me to clean up my room. When I met my wife, she was pretty grossed out any time she'd come over to my place because I just didn't know how to keep things tidy and organized. Years later, I learned how to keep things in better order. I've learned how to curate the things I own and purchase. My wife had been doing KonMari cleanings of our home before we had even heard the name of Marie Kondo!

My wife and I have even managed to get our kids learning our simple living/minimalist habits by the way we've raised them. Our oldest son has had a job for about six months now, and he's managed to spend less of the money he's earned in that time than I do in a week if I'm left to purchase whatever I want.

To wrap up, the finished product of the house in the show has got me anxious for warmer weather and some serious spring cleaning. Minimalism/simple living is an ongoing process and sometimes we all need little inspirational pieces to pop up out of nowhere and help us refocus. What's something you need to refocus on, and what sort of things help you to "spark joy" for it?

Wow 😲
Thanks 🙏

Thank you

Just seeing how beautifully the house was renovated ignited the desire in my heart to already pursue my dream of having my own house and lot.

I have put off that plan because of the pandemic, but I would work well so I could finally have my dream house.

#dreemersforlife

@idlemind the tag for bounty is dreemerforlife, there is no s after dreemer. I am awarding you Dreem token, but make sure to use the correct tag so that you fo not miss tokens

I'm much more on board with the 'Does it bring you joy' concept. My spaces are cluttered, but the clutter is all things which bring me joy

Yes, I find running things against the "joy question" is a much better way of keeping track of your "minimalism". I believe it gives you the freedom to keep a collection of things that make you happy, but it's also a way to keep yourself in check about whether things are really worth keeping if you continue to ask the question about your possessions.

hehehehe i think my hubby is the same as you! He surrounds himself with clutter LOL I surround myself with DECLUTTER. hahahaha

happy to see you back in DreemPort Stuart! you were missed :)

Yhanks. Hoping to get back in the groove

hehehe take your time - we don't go anywhere 😄

The renovation was amazing and I believe the owner would be super happy to win such a huge amount for renovating her house. Having your own house is the best as you can do what you feel is best while making it attractive. Thanks for sharing this 🙌
#dreemerforlife

First of all I’m proud of the minimal living your oldest son has adapted to.
I screamed when I saw the transformation of the house and of course we might want to do something but sometimes inspiration goes a long way to dragging us to actually get the things done.

#dreemerforlife

Thanks, we're pretty proud of him too!

I agree with those who find it difficult to keep the peace in somewhat cluttered environments. But not everyone has to feel the same way. But the minimalist style has some advantages that when carried out can become irreversible, so much they like. I'm glad to read that you are resuming the desire to be more regularly on Hive. Success with that. Regards @robsteady

I love this, Rob! I'm in this place in my life too... looking to simplify and minimalise- and have started. It feels great to see unused baggage leaving our home. My boys were always messy but they are slowly becoming more appreciative of not having the clutter hanging around to clear up all the time! The aim is to end up with just what we need, and to create more usable space in the process, so that we can enjoy our home more as a family. We have a dreem of one day seeking out a bigger place in a more rural setting where we can enjoy the peace of the countryside more... and I want at least one mountain, valley, and river in the equation if I can help it! haha. Asking too much? Nope! I don't think so !LOLZ And we have kids too and want to ensure that they get through their schooling too before making any huge moves... if we can help it. So I hear you on that one. So great to see others doing this kinda thing too. I have @dreemsteem to thank for mentioning your blog to me 🤗 Hopefully catch your blog again soon...

@robsteady, I sent you an

I particularly liked the comment about enjoying your home as a family! That is a great way to describe what we want to do with a house once we can get one. The place we're in is rather small. It works for us, but I can definitely see a bigger place with a usable yard being a better place for us to be outside together doing things. Thanks for stopping by!

I hear you. Our place is relatively small too, especially with a growing family, but houses in the suburbs in England are not quite the same as those in the suburbs in South Africa, where I am from originally... so a bit of an adjustment over the years 😂 I hope that we both find our dreem homes with a little more space and tranquillity for quality family time and connection 🤗

It is awesome to have kids adopt the minimalistic approach to doing things early in life. I learned this somehow late in my part but I am trying my best to inculcate it in my kid. When a house is free of clusters, there is more space to use for other purposes.

So very true. Not only the house, it helps to free up your mind for more important matters as well!

Yay! 🤗

I agree with the point we at times need a spark to ignite oursekver. Whenever the required inspiration or encouragement is given at a spot we get ready to do what otherwise we would just be pondering for long without taking the required step. I am glad to know that Dreems gave you the encouragement you needed. She has been a great inspiration to many of us.

With respect to your house messing story, I just imagined the amount of work and patience your wife would have to go through while inculcating the habits of tidies in you. Hehe. It's pretty difficult for a tidy person to bear chaos in ones surrounding.

Hoping to see you more active on Hive and be with us as a #dreemer

Here at home we are doing the same, trying to make kids participate more in the house tasks. When I was a kid, my mother prefered doing by herself, since I wasn't never enough doing that, she prefered her way.

We've been trying to get our older boys to be more involved with chores and such, but my wife has always wanted to be the one to take care of everything, so it's a little difficult to transition.

You did a great job with the renovation. We are glad to have you back here, welcome☺️

#dreemerforlife

I didn't do the renovation, it was done for a television show, but thanks for the welcome back.

You’re welcome

I love how "Ugliest House in America" sparked that excitement for you! Your journey from a less tidy past to embracing minimalism is truly inspiring. Waiting for the right time to find a new home for your growing family shows patience and consideration. The mid-century modern aesthetic seems to have struck a chord with you, and the transformation of that rundown house is impressive. It's always refreshing to get that boost of inspiration for spring cleaning and maintaining a minimalist lifestyle.
#dreemerforlife

There's no place like home is one of my mom's favorite quote. Truly there's no comfort like a home whose environment is conducive too. Looking at the makeover photo just make me wish my own house could get a make over lol.

I have planned to take out time to thrash the things I no longer need, which would leave my house with a lot of space but I just haven't had the strength. Now I have been motivated with this photo and I'd give it a try. Also will go ahead to be more disciplined with my savings plan.

Thank you for sharing

Oh, wow! What a huge transformation! Whoever handled that renovation project did an amazing job, considering the before and after pics. Welcome back, @robsteady .

#dreemerforlife

What a transformation! They did an amazing job cleaning the home. Who would think that's the same house?

It's nice to know your wife helped you to learn a new habit. It's good to take care of your environment
#dreemerforlife

That was a nice one, renovating an old apartment to make it look that beautiful is really amazing, you must have done a hell of work out there.

Thank you for sharing this with us, it is really awesome.

#dreemerforlife

Great job on a lovely posts, well done👍The transformation of the house is mind blowing.

It's the space for me... Probably because I like lot's of spaces

#dreemerforlife

It's so beautiful seeing how someone comes into our messed-up lifestyle and makes it great! She helped you organized some aspects of your life and that's truly beautiful and amazing!

As for the house, it's freaking spacious and will contain the whole family! Congratulations on your new house! #dreemerforlife

Thank you for sharing this inspiring story! I don't know 'Ugliest House in America' at all but the transformations are amazing so many thanks for the discovery, it's the kind of show I like to watch when I feel like settling down.

At home, so in my converted van, I also try to follow the principles of minimalism, getting rid of useless objects and keeping only what is really important to me (utility and/or joy).

But in my story, what interests me most is how you and your wife managed to integrate your children into this minimalist lifestyle, especially in this age of overconsumption. Are these values that you were already starting to have before the children?

I don't have any children, so I don't realize how difficult it is, but all around me, I see families who can't refuse their children things as soon as they go out. And yes, it must be difficult to refuse something, but at the same time, my values are far removed from this consumer society. So I'm really interested in your opinion.

#dreemerforlife

Yes, my wife and I had already started a bit of a minimalism journey before having kids. She had done a major purge or two by the time our first sone was born and I had done most of my purging shortly after the second was born. It took me a little while to catch up to where my wife was with it. I still have a slightly different view about minimalism than she does. I don’t mind certain collections (vinyl/records, books, technology stuff) whereas she’s a bit more on the strict side (she reads a book and puts it in a donate pile the next day).

Our kids did have a lot of toys when they were little, but we made a point to them about all the toys they had but never played with. They understood that and got rid of stuff they didn’t need. Since I was the only money earner in the house, we never had money to just spend on getting things for our boys when we were out shopping so they learned to be okay not getting things every time we were out pretty early. The hardest part was convincing family members not to just get them a whole bunch of stuff for birthdays and Christmas.

This is super inspiring, thank you so much for this feedback. I find it really adminrable that you managed to instill these values in your children from a young age, making them understand the importance of not accumulating unnecessary objects.

I think my vision of minimalism is the same as yours: there are no strict rules to follow, but rather an approach that can be adapted according to each person's needs and interests, without falling into extreme accumulation.

For example, I'm a fan of pocket knives (EDC), and it's impossible for me to get rid of them because they mean so much to me and represent who I am.

Coming back to your children, as I said, I don't have any yet, but these are values I really want to instill in them. And indeed, I think it's hard to resist the social and family pressure to give lots of presents!

The place is really beautiful, well decorated and to aim for this very kind of improvement is very good
#dreemerforlife#

Congrats on your new house and how beautifully decorated it came out.

#dreemerforlife.

I like the renovations, the touch looks great.

It's a good thing your wife was the opposite of you and that has shaped you a lot. I'll need someone like that too. Haha.
#dreemerforlife

Haha, yeah, she has helped me to refine my sense of organization and cleanliness for sure. Thanks for swinging by!

That's why we need a help mate to help us grow.

and you're welcome

HGTV sure did a great job of sponsoring the renovations for the finale winner. T also like the outcome of the renovated house, it screams peace and tranquility, hahaha.

Having space on the home, learning to do away with a clutter of things is good cos it allows more positive energy flow through. Your son's minimalist lifestyle is also nice. In a time and age when teens and youths want to blow up money, he is being mindful of how he spends his money, really nice I say.

Always a fabulous #dreemerforlife

Wow, that's interesting! That sort of a show makes a lot of sense truly, haha. Thank goodness for your wife's presence in getting you on the right track to keeping things in order!

Thank you! I agree, she's done a lot of good for me.

The minimalist lifestyle has a lot of advantages to it and it's good you are teaching your kids about it.

The house looks very beautiful. I was in awe seeing the transformation.

Thank you for sharing. #dreemerforlife
