Recently, I read about the controversy that arose on social media because someone decided to replace the expression “Merry Christmas” with “Happy Holidays,” on the grounds that the former could marginalize a group of people who do not celebrate Christmas. Personally, I believe that social media lends itself to creating unnecessary controversy over trivial matters, while neglecting those that are truly important and significant.
I believe that celebrating Christmas is not only celebrating an event, such as the arrival of the baby Jesus into the world, but also an opportunity to celebrate hope, faith, joy, the spirit of solidarity, and love for our neighbors. True greatness is enjoying family togetherness, selfless hugs, sharing what little or much we have, spreading good messages, and serving others. Celebrating the little things in everyday life, those that sometimes go unnoticed because they happen every day.
Just like that night in Bethlehem, the essential things remain the same: humanity above stridency, above the superfluous, and smallness as the seed of greatness. Simple joy for what we have, not for what we lack.
Likewise, remember that home is not a house, but the space that protects, that welcomes, where life is celebrated. And that space may be the humblest of all, but it is still enough. Because we don't need so much fanfare to celebrate, nor do we need riches in our home; only unity and love are enough.
So, rather than wasting our energy on fruitless discussions about what to call or name these days, we should put our energy into practicing what we preach, into doing good deeds. How about hugging the brother or father who is next to us, our children, our nephews and nieces? Hugging for no reason. Giving our company to someone who is alone. Visiting, being there, talking, and especially listening. Sharing food with those who are close to us and cannot afford to buy it. Sending a message of affection, sharing a song that brings joy. Let's imagine today that if we had been there at the birth of Jesus, how we would have helped. We don't have to give big, expensive gifts; we can be that guiding light, the accompanying silence, the hand that offers shelter and food. Just that: no frills. Merry Christmas or happy holidays to all.
