When I was reading @phoenixwren's post, I was reminded of a practice that I’ve been doing for quite some years now. This practice helps me with tackling overconsumption problem but also helping clean my space.
Inventorying our items can help provide us with clear picture of the things we own, we might need or the things we should reconsider purchasing. When you think about it, minimalism can also help curb spending and for those who are into saving up, that’ll help us do that faster without feeling miserable.
For me, the things I’ve been trying to look into the most is my skincare and make up products. These days, I’ve been indulging myself with some skin care and make up. As much as I tried to keep it minimal, it seems that I find myself buying different shades and racking up a couple of lipsticks. Personally, when I really like something, it can get out of hands and considering there are numerous brands out there trying to make us buy whatever is on their shelves, that is a challenge itself.
Lately, the way I see from the overall internet space is that Minimalism or underconsumption will still be a trend in 2025. I’ve seen all over that even the no-buy movement is kicking off as well. That is a good sign that we’ve put a pause on yolo and endless consumerism to something against it.
A journey won’t be that difficult if there are also people going through it. This is why, this year I took some time to list all the things I’ve owned and put a stop to any future extra purchases. It helps me become more conscious of my own spending and whether I need to buy another shade of lipstick which to be honest, they’re still in the same shade only a little lighter.
This little list right here will help me reach my saving goals faster too and also not being wasteful.
When you’re a minimalist, it doesn’t mean you don’t need to take care of your skin or skimping on make up. It is far from being cheap. It actually is helping us to be more conscious of the products we choose. Not only that, we can also make a lot easier assessment because less is more.
Skincare is also the kind of product that you have to use multiple times before you can see result. Unless a certain problem arises, it’s not the kind of thing that you should jump in from one to another.
I learned my lesson.
These are the corner of my skin care where I put everything I own for this year and will not replace them until it's used up. Being underconsumption does not also mean you have to use expired products too. That's one thing some people get it so wrong and only use that as a performative underconsumption and for the shits and giggles on the internet.
Again, I will not buy anything new unless they are really used up and there’s nothing left inside the container. Afterall, these skin care and make up has longer shelf life that can last a year or two. So, it’s best to use them until they ran out which if you’re not using it too often like myself, they can last pretty long.
It also aligns with my goal this year where I want to minimize purchase but maximize my savings. There’s so many things tied to it that I’ve written about the last couple of days. This is going to help in the long run.
By the way, Minimemo is a serialized blog that will be published every Friday in which I’ll talk about my minimalism journey, learning and experiences co-existing with a hoarder. If you want to follow that adventure, stay tuned every Friday!

My goal, too is to minimise purchase and maximise savings. Being a minimalist helps us to be conscious of what we purchase and that's something I have enjoyed in this journey. Why have newer and lots of products or items when you could use up those ones in your closet? Being mindful and conscious should be the key this year.
Right? It's nice to know that you also get the benefit of having this lifestyle. There's a lot of things on the market these days and it's tempting to get into the trend but life isn't a cookie cutter, so that's OK if you don't really follow the trend.
I am a minimalist too. I only buy things after I consumed the last one just like my lipstick or my mascara
That's a good one to start, I hope you can stay consistent with this lifestyle.
Of course I can cause I can't buy a new one or another shade of lipstick since I have limited money for those stuffs 😁
Ohhh, that's a good strategy to avoid spending too much too. Managing our expenses can really help us save more. You know i'm actually thankful I don't have skin care routine. Its not that I don't care, its just that I am too lazy to even manage my own skin, huhu.
I used to be so lazy too but overtime I learned that the way we present ourselves can speak volume about who we are. It's shallow and vain but honestly, from what I observed that just the way it works and I am starting to just play the game people been playing 😄
Wonderful! I just recently watched a video on YouTube from a woman who analyzes influencer culture, and she just put out a video about those beauty influencers who have whole rooms of products like they're a store. It is CRAZY how much stuff they have. There is literally no way they could use it all before it expires. I can understand people liking having different shades or versions of things, but your house does not need to look like the inside of a makeup store!

I really think I know who you're talking about and we probably follow the same person. She's also huge exposing MLM and influencer and do a good job reminding us that they're not real life and it shouldn't really be something we aspire to. I mean, like for real, it's also bad for the environment and just by doing that simple steps, we're actually doing a lot more than we think
Yes, I think it's the same person! :)

very attractive colors. The trend of skincare and makeup is currently increasing. It feels like, if you can't manage it, you can buy a lot of stuff for both of those things
Honestly, my eyes get dizzy whenever I come across a lady's make up table.😅
It's good you're doing away with the so many cans and substances.

That's such a valid point🙌
It's interesting when I think about how that relates to the UK. I see people spending and being crazy the same way, yet more high street shops are closing. I'm not sure if it's just the shift in internet purchasing or what... Mind you, I only happened to be in a busy Shopping Complex right after Christmas, and people were going mad for shopping. I know consumerism is good for the economy, but I'd like to see more underconsumption from a minimalist outlook, of people wasting less.
I'm excited and looking forward to reading bout your discoveries and journey, Mac!👍
Lovely pictures! I really dig the vibes for some reason. :D
Also, is it even possible to be a minimalist when it comes to lips? Lip shades and nail polish do my head in every time because there's just so many of them. Sure it's only a slightly paler pink than the 3 you already have, but what if that slight alteration is the difference between complete misery and utter joy? Isn't it worth a try? I'm (obviously) just messing. I avoid the lip section of the store because (see above), but I have to force myself to replace the other less-assuming stuff like mascara or eyeliner every so often.
Really, reading your efforts in journaling/documenting your habits (incl. spending) are tempting me to try to do that in my own life. So cheers for that, maybe?
I am someone who always buys things if they start to run out, then I buy new ones, this is very important to minimize expenses. By the way your lipstick uses hanasui products, which are very similar shade boba to what I use.
