If You Lose Your Garment, Don’t Lose Your Dream

It's a solemn Sunday morning here. Looking through my journal this morning reminded me of some crucial activities and projects I needed to undertake. I had forgotten, but thanks to the wisdom of writing vision as instructed by God in Habakkuk 2:2. While pondering on the few things that lay bare before me and the risks of choices surrounding it, the Biblical character - Joseph came to mind.

One of Joseph's most profound moments is when he flees from Potiphar's wife, leaving his garment in her hands to protect his integrity and his dream. Reflecting on this moment offers deep lessons for me and everyone who might be going through challenges on their journey toward fulfilling their purpose.

Joseph, a young man with a divine dream, was destined for greatness. His dreams of leadership and significance were not just personal aspirations but revelations of God’s plan for his life. However, his path to fulfilling those dreams was riddled with trials: his brothers' betrayal, slavery in a foreign land, and false accusations.

Despite these setbacks, Joseph was consistently fixed on his commitment to the God who gave him the dream. He never wavered in his character at home and in the land he was taken slavery. His story reminds us that the journey toward fulfilling our dreams often comes with unexpected hurdles that are geared at testing our character and faith.

Along Joseph's storyline, Genesis 39 tells us about his encounter with Potiphar’s wife. As a young man serving faithfully in Potiphar’s house, Joseph caught her attention. She tried to seduce him repeatedly, but Joseph stood firm, declaring, “How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?” (Genesis 39:9, ESV). When she cornered him, he fled, leaving his garment behind.

This act of fleeing is often seen as a sign of weakness, but in Joseph's case, it was a demonstration of strength. He valued his relationship with God and the dream God gave him more than his reputation or temporary comfort. Joseph chooses to lose his garment to preserve his integrity and ensure that nothing will stand in the way of his divine purpose. Even though this act led to imprisonment, it was a necessary step toward fulfilling his destiny. Meanwhile, there are several lessons to draw from Joseph here.

1. Protect Your Dream at All Costs

Dreams are fragile yet powerful. They can be threatened by distractions, temptations, and challenges. Joseph’s decision to flee shows that some battles are not worth fighting directly. Walking away may feel like a loss at the moment, but it could be the very act that preserves your future.

2. Choose Integrity Over Image

Joseph’s garment was a symbol of his position in Potiphar’s household. Losing it meant losing his status and being misunderstood. Yes, he was misunderstood indeed. However, Joseph chose to prioritize his integrity over his image. He trusted that God would vindicate him in due time. This means that while pursuing your dreams, there will be moments when standing for what is right may cost you relationships, positions, or opportunities. However, it is worth knowing that God's plan will not be derailed by temporary losses.

3. God’s Plan will Always Prevail

Even though Joseph was falsely accused and imprisoned, God’s favour never left him. He rose to prominence in Pharaoh’s court and fulfilled the dreams he had as a young boy. This reminds us that no setback can thwart God’s purpose for our lives. What may seem like a loss today could be the setup for a greater victory tomorrow.

Hold on to Your Dream!

While "losing your garment" could represent losing something valuable due to circumstances beyond your control or because of your commitment to doing what is right, they are not the end. The key is to hold on to your dream and trust God’s process.

In moments that your "garments are being dragged", stay rooted in God’s Word. Let His promises guide you. Joseph’s faith in God kept him focused even in the darkest times. Moreover, avoid compromise. Like Joseph, refuse to compromise your values for temporary gain. Integrity paves the way for lasting success. Trust that every challenge and loss is part of a bigger picture. God uses trials to shape us and prepare us for the fulfillment of our dreams.

NOTE: Be sure that you're not guilty as charged! Joseph was not. His hands were clean and that made the whole difference.

As we close on this, choose to honour God, protect our integrity, and trust the dream-giver to bring His purpose to pass.
