It's been a while since I took part in Three Tune Tuesday, but as I find myself having more time to write, I wanted to share a wonderful Hip Hop group that come from my home country. 'KNEECAP' is made up of Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Provaí. These three lads, like to rap in Irish as they are passionate about preserving our native tongue. There are not many artists that perform in As Gaelige, especially Hip Hop and coming from the North of the country as well. These boys are a lot of fun and have been using their music to express some of the frustrations of living in the North and growing up there. It's classic Hip Hop, a bit tongue in check, but also real and raw.
There goal is to ruffle some feathers, to say things that will get people talking, they certainly like to stoke the fire. They have been very vocal about their support for Palestine. Attending T.V interviews displaying the Palestine Flag, whilst been told not to do so. They appeared on Irish T.V and told the people that they will use their platform to speak for the injustice happening. In my opinion we need more people speaking out.
They have a wonderful grasp on Politics and how it doesn't really take a lot to cause controversy in the North of Ireland, but there is a need to speak up about what has happened. These three lads have helped create the first Irish Speaking film in history, which is about them and their lives in Belfast.
I'll start with Fine Art which is the title of their debut album. Kneecap have been around for a few years, but this is their fist album, having only released demo tapes previously. They rap in both Irish and English. This tune is really about their journey and some of the things that have been said to them and about them. In their tongue and check style. I do love the beats in this tune and their in your face attitude, whilst rapping in Irish.
C-E-A-R-T-A, you say it needs more Tiocfaidh ár Lá’s,
ag dul ar aghaidh faoi go bhfuil easpa collabs ag Kneecap, fuckin cuirigí ceol amach!
So you’re wondering why we take ages to release music? We’re always on stages
All over in different places, rockin balaclavas on our faces.
The lyrics in Irish, translate as..
RIGHT, you say it needs more Our Day will come, going on about the lack of collabs at Kneecap, fuckin put out some music!
After not releasing any new material for 3-4 years, they came back with, ' It's been ages'.
Where they rap about how it's been a long time since anyone heard from them and how they love to be
controversial. But they are back now, so everyone watch out. They are here and have lots to say. Once again this one, has a wicked little beat.
Propaganda machine
Kneecap back all over your screens
Drochmheas ó mar a bhí
Ach i bhfad níos measa, wait and see
Cause it's been ages
Controversy won't phase us
We hold all the cards and they're aces
Try to protect your kids but they'll hear us
This one addresses mental health and the price that some have to pay for so called sanity. How therapy can be so expensive, but yet rarely seems to work. How they want instead to find their own way and not have to depend on others to tell them what to do. I think lots of people can identify with this song. Having worked in mental health, I can say, that self empowerment is the most important thing, not making us more dependent on others..
Seasaigí, tú ar do ghlúine they’re doing it to ya constantly
An individual is surely what ya want to be, you’re born to stand out
Live your fantasy before they eat you up and spit you out and laugh at ye
Fan socair, bí díograiseach is cloígh le do phlean mucker
There’ll be push backs but relax siocair, gur seo do thriailse
Do shaol atá ann brother
It’s a philosophy,
Stand up, you on your knees they're doing it to ya constantly
An individual is surely what ya want to be,
you're born to stand out Live your fantasy
before they eat you up and spit you out and laugh at ye Stay calm,
be enthusiastic and stick to your plan mucker
There'll be push backs but relax sugar, that this is your trial Your life is there brother It's a philosophy,

I like the way they switch beteen gaelic and English which makes it a little more relatable. There's definitely that northern/Europe sound in there that's more edgy and grimey. Love it.
