Perhaps she is not one of the most famous artists in the world, but that doesn't mean that she has been less talented, because fame definitely does not determine quality, of this there are many examples in music, but without a doubt Cesária Évora was one of the best interpreters from the African continent and crossed borders to be recognized and admired in many countries.

I knew almost nothing about her until one day it was announced that she would come to Venezuela to offer a single concert on May 29, 2009. I was working as a culture reporter in those days and I was assigned to cover the press conference that she was going to offer and also the concert.
Tenía que prepararme para asistir a ese encuentro con la artista, así que unos días antes comencé a leer sobre ella en Internet y sobre todo a escuchar su música, ver sus videos. En verdad me sorprendió su voz fuerte pero muy emotiva y melódica, saliendo de ella casi sin esfuerzo.
I had to prepare to attend that meeting with the artist, so a few days before I started reading about her on the Internet and especially listening to her music, watching her videos. I was really surprised by her strong but very emotional and melodic voice, coming out of her almost effortlessly.
Además, su biografía y el lugar de donde provenía me llamaron mucho la atención, ¿qué sabía yo hasta ese momento de Cabo Verde? Solamente que estaba en el continente africano, nada más.
In addition, her biography and the place where she came from caught my attention, what did I know about Cape Verde up to that point? Only that was on the African continent, nothing more.
Leyendo un poco de la historia de este país, supe que nadie vivía allí cuando a mediados del siglo XV los portugueses descubrieron estas islas y las colonizaron para usar su territorio como centro del comercio de esclavos destinados a América. Por eso, el portugués y el criollo (mezcla de lenguas africanas con portugués) son los idiomas oficiales de Cabo Verde.
Reading a little of the history of this country, I learned that no one lived there when in the mid-15th century the Portuguese discovered these islands and colonized them to use their territory as a center for the slave trade destined for America. For this reason, Portuguese and Creole (a mixture of African languages with Portuguese) are the official languages of Cape Verde.

In various periods of its history, the population suffered from famine due to the exploitation of resources that only benefited the colonizers and the climatic conditions of these islands, which are very arid, not arable. One of those times was between 1941 and 1948, years in which around 50,000 people died without the Portuguese government doing anything to help them.
Precisamente en esos años difíciles nació Cesária Évora, el 27 de agosto de 1941, en Mindelo, capital de Sâo Vicente, una de las 10 islas de este archipiélago volcánico. Hija de un músico, a los 16 años comenzó a cantar en bares de su ciudad y en la radio, pero fue muchos años después, en 1988, cuando tenía 47 años de edad, que grabó su primer disco titulado La diva de los pies descalzos.
Precisely in those difficult years, Cesária Évora was born on August 27, 1941, in Mindelo, capital of Sâo Vicente, one of the 10 islands of this volcanic archipelago. She is the daughter of a musician, at the age of 16 she began to sing in bars in her city and in the radio, but it was many years later, in 1988, when she was 47 years old, that she recorded her first album titled: The barefoot diva.
Su canto siempre fue la morna, un género musical y de danza que suena a una mezcla entre el fado portugués, la música brasileña y los ritmos africanos. Cantada en idioma criollo de Cabo Verde e interpretada principalmente con instrumentos de cuerda como guitarras, ukeleles, cavaquinhos y violines, sus letras están inspiradas en la esclavitud, la pobreza, las injusticias sociales, el mar, la diáspora, el amor, el desamor y claro también temas más alegres como el carnaval.
Her song was always the morna, a musical and dance genre that sounds like a mix between Portuguese fado, Brazilian music and African rhythms. Sung in the Creole language of Cape Verde and performed mainly with string instruments such as guitars, ukuleles, cavaquinhos and violins, its lyrics are inspired by slavery, poverty, social injustices, the sea, the diaspora, love, heartbreak and of course also happier themes like the carnival.
Cuando Cesária Évora se hizo famosa a nivel mundial (porque en su país ya lo era) a finales de los años ’80, se la reconocía como la “reina de la morna”, género que en 2019 fue aprobado por la Unesco como Patrimonio Inmaterial de la Humanidad, y también como “la diva de los pies descalzos”, porque no le gustaba usar zapatos ya que se había acostumbrado a andar sin ellos, se sentía cómoda así y de esta manera subía a los escenarios.
When Cesária Évora became famous worldwide (because in her country she already was) in the late '80s, she was recognized as the “queen of the morna”, a genre that in 2019 was approved by Unesco as Intangible Heritage of Humanity, and also as "the barefoot diva", because she didn't like to wear shoes since she had gotten used to walking without them, she felt comfortable like that and in this way she would go on stages.
Como ya mencioné, la fama mundial le llegó casi a los 50 años porque después de la independencia de Cabo Verde en 1975, su país pasó por años difíciles y tuvo que dejar de cantar para mantener a su familia ya que no podía cubrir sus gastos con la música, sin embargo en la década de los ’80 la situación económica mejoró y un colega la animó a volver y luego de presentarse en Portugal surgió la posibilidad de ir a París. A partir de allí su carrera se disparó e hizo muchas giras, ganó premios y grabó varios discos, incluyendo colaboraciones con otros artistas como los brasileños Caetano Veloso y Marisa Montes, los estadounidenses Erykah Badu y Bonnie Raitt y los cubanos Chucho Valdés y Compay Segundo, entre otros.
As I already mentioned, world fame reached her almost 50 years old because after the independence of Cape Verde in 1975, her country went through difficult years and she had to stop singing to support her family as she couldn't cover her expenses with music, however in the decade of the '80 the economic situation improved and a colleague encouraged her to return and after performing in Portugal the possibility of going to Paris arose. From there her career soared and she toured many times, won awards and recorded several albums, including collaborations with other artists such as the Brazilians Caetano Veloso and Marisa Montes, the Americans Erykah Badu and Bonnie Raitt and the Cubans Chucho Valdés and Compay Segundo, among others.

Aparte de su carrera artística se involucró con labores sociales y en 2003 fue nombrada Embajadora de Buena Voluntad del Programa Mundial de Alimentos (PMA) de las Naciones Unidas. En su país donó gran parte de sus ganancias financiando el sistema educativo y la atención hospitalaria, además de ayudar a particulares.
Apart from her artistic career, she became involved with social work and in 2003 she was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations World Food Program (WFP). In her country she donated a large part of her earnings financing the educational system and hospital care, as well as helping individuals.
Luego de esta reseña de su vida, vuelvo al momento en que visitó Venezuela para dar un concierto en Caracas. Los medios de comunicación fuimos convocados un día antes de su presentación para una rueda de prensa con la artista, que se realizó en el Hotel Meliá de la capital venezolana.
After this review of her life, I go back to the time when she visited Venezuela to give a concert in Caracas. The media were summoned the day before her presentation for a press conference with the artist, which was held at the Meliá Hotel in the Venezuelan capital.
El salón dispuesto para el encuentro era bastante acogedor, no tenía la acostumbrada mesa que suelen poner para las ruedas de prensa y el artista sentado tras ella, sino que había un cómodo sillón y a los periodistas nos ubicaron al frente para conversar con Cesária Évora. Ella apareció con su traductora y se sentó tímidamente, yo saqué mi cámara y capturé estas fotos:
The room set up for the meeting was quite cozy, it didn't have the usual table that they usually set for press conferences and the artist seated behind it, but there was a comfortable armchair and we journalists were placed in front to talk with Cesária Évora. She appeared with her translator and sat shyly, I took out my camera and captured these photos:
La cantante caboverdiana saludó a todos y comenzó la ronda de preguntas, entre las interrogantes que respondió estuvieron sus influencias musicales: Billie Holliday y Edith Piaf, y también algo de la música que le gustaba escuchar en su casa: Charles Aznavour, Julio Iglesias, Nat King Cole y música brasileña, la cual es parecida a la de su país aunque más alegre, señaló.

La rueda de prensa no fue muy larga, ella hizo un breve repaso por su vida, motivaciones y de qué iba la morna, el género de su canto, especie de soul de Cabo Verde. Me pareció una mujer agradable pero de pocas palabras, se veía que disfrutaba salir al escenario más que hablar con los medios jejeje.
The press conference was not very long, she gave a brief review of her life, motivations and what the morna was about, the genre of her singing, a kind of soul from Cape Verde. To me she seemed like a nice woman but with few words, you could see that she enjoyed going on stage more than talking to the media hehehe.
Al día siguiente, 29 de mayo de 2009 en la noche, fue el esperado concierto en la sala Ríos Reyna del Teatro Teresa Carreño, Caracas, quizás el escenario más imponente de Venezuela.
The next day, May 29, 2009, in the evening, was the awaited concert at the Ríos Reyna hall of the Teresa Carreño Theater, Caracas, perhaps the most impressive stage in Venezuela.
Llegué al recinto y mientras esperaba para entrar con el pase de prensa, me encontré con una amiga y su esposo, hablamos un poco y luego entré a la sala, estaba llena, me impresionó la cantidad de gente que conocía a esta artista, estaba muy emocionada por verla en vivo.
I arrived at the venue and while I was waiting to enter with the press pass, I met a friend and her husband, we talked a little and then I entered the hall, it was full, I was impressed by the number of people who knew this artist, I was very excited for seeing her live.

Mientras los escuchaba yo iba empezando el artículo, la reseña sobre el concierto, cuando trabajas en una agencia de noticias la rapidez es esencial, tenía que ir escribiendo lo que iba sucediendo en la tarima para así al final no tardarme demasiado en enviar el artículo al jefe de redacción para su revisión y publicación inmediata. En estos casos nos daban un teléfono celular Blackberry, allí redactábamos y luego enviábamos la información.
While I was listening to them I was starting the article, the review about the concert, when you work in a news agency speed is essential, I had to write what was happening on the stage so that in the end it wouldn't take me too long to send the article to the editor in chief for immediate review and publication. Cuando terminó la presentación de los teloneros y después de la acostumbrada pausa, como a las 9:00 de la noche se montaron en tarima los músicos caboverdianos que formaban parte del conjunto de Cesária Évora, el cual incluía: piano, guitarra, cavaquinho, bajo, percusión, violín y saxofón. Apenas ellos comenzaron a tocar, la artista entró al escenario bailando y los aplausos no se hicieron esperar.
When the opening act ended and after the customary break, around 9:00 at night, the Cape Verdean musicians who were part of Cesária Évora's ensemble, which included: piano, guitar, cavaquinho, bass, percussion, violin and saxophone, got on stage. As soon as they began to play, the artist entered the stage dancing and the applause didn't wait.
Saludó al público con su portuñol: “Buenas noches” y de inmediato comenzó a cantar, no recuerdo el orden de las canciones pero interpretó sus grandes éxitos como Angola, Petit pays, Carnaval de São Vicente, Sodade… en total el concierto duró una hora y media, con algunas pausas para que Cesária fumara o se hidratara.
She greeted the audience with her Portuñol (mix of portuguese and spanish): “Good night” and immediately began to sing, I don't remember the order of the songs but she performed her greatest hits such as Angola, Petit pays, Carnaval de São Vicente, Sodade… in total the concert lasted one hour and a half, with some breaks for Cesária to smoke or hydrate.
Aunque no interactuó mucho con el público, hablando y esas cosas que suelen hacer los artistas en vivo, ella nos cautivó a todos simplemente con su voz, en varios momentos logró ponernos de pie. Recuerdo que al final cantó la famosa pieza Bésame mucho, momento en el que arrancó gritos y besos de muchos, besos que ella también arrojó antes de agradecer y despedirse de la audiencia.
Although she didn't interact much with the public, speaking and those things that live artists usually do, she captivated us all simply with her voice, at various moments she managed to stand us up. I remember that at the end she sang the famous piece Bésame mucho, at which point she pulled screams and kisses from many, kisses that she also threw before thanking and saying goodbye to the audience.
Desde ese momento me volví su fan y agradecí a mi profesión por haberme permitido descubrir y ver en vivo y directo a una artista como ella, genuina, embajadora de la cultura de su pueblo.
From that moment I became her fan and thanked my profession for allowing me to discover and see live and direct an artist like her, genuine, ambassador of the culture of her people.
En esta gira latinoamericana que hizo en 2009, después de Venezuela también visitó Argentina, Chile y Colombia. Tenía 68 años en ese momento, dos años después, el 17 de diciembre de 2011, falleció a los 70 años en su país debido a una insuficiencia respiratoria, un año antes la habían operado a corazón abierto.
In this Latin American tour that she did in 2009, after Venezuela she also visited Argentina, Chile and Colombia. She was 68 years old at the time, two years later, on December 17, 2011, she passed away at the age of 70 in her country due to respiratory failure, a year before she had been operated on open heart.
Por supuesto el legado de “la reina de la morna” o “la diva de los pies descalzos” no morirá jamás. Uno de los tres aeropuertos internacionales de su país lleva su nombre y también el banco emitió un billete para homenajearla.
Of course the legacy of "the queen of the morna" or "the diva of bare feet" will never die. With her art, she made Cape Verde known worldwide, put it on the cultural and tourist map. One of the three international airports in her country bears her name and the bank also issued a bill to honor her.
Para mí, su música no sólo me mostró una cultura que desconocía, también, como amante de los viajes que soy, me hizo interesarme por visitar algún día las exóticas islas de Cabo Verde.
For me, her music not only showed me a culture that I didn't know, but also, as a travel lover that I am, it made me interested in visiting the exotic islands of Cape Verde one day.
