My first Three Tune Tuesday post...week 86

in Music2 years ago (edited)

After tripping over a post from @ablaze last week, I discovered #ThreeTuneTuesdays. Me being me, I thought I'll have some of that!

So here is my inaugural post.

I was mulling over having some sort of theme or link for the tunes. It just appeals to me. But, y'know, it's been a long day at work and I can feel my brain staring to shut down as I type - so I think I might just chuck three randos into the mix for today, and maybe give future TTTs a bit more thought. 😉

I often wake up with a tune in my head. An ear-worm that settles itself in and hangs around for a while. Ages ago, I started a Spotify playlist to keep track. Haven't added to that for a while though. Kinda forgot about it until now...

Anyway, this was this morning's ear-worm....

I've been a Roy Harper fan since the mid/late 80s when a friend introduced me to him. Roy himself has been going since the mid/late 60s. I adore his music, his attitude - his whole vibe. He's become such a part of my musical makeup in that way that the tone of his voice had just become so....familiar. Hugely influential, but always evading mainstream success - deliberately in most cases. I intend to carry on doing these #ttt posts - suspect Roy will keep popping up...

So, thinking about artists I have liked for so long that that familiarity has bedded in, I guess it's not a big jump for me to pick something by Gary Numan. A fan since Are Friends Electric in 1979, I was in the fan club in the early 80's and I'm still buying his music. So much to choose from here, but lets go fairly early. I remember hearing this for the first time back in the day and being quite taken with it. His voice resonates - but this is as much about the sound of the synths and strings (Same on Cars as well - that phased synth string sounds. Ace.). Still give me shivers.

I know what you might be thinking - that's a big jump from Harper to Numan. But they live quite happily side by side in my record collection. Along with a wide range of other stuff. I like what I like. I was going to run though the genres I have on my shelves - but I wouldn't know where to start and dislike genres anyway. I might post my Discogs collection link one day so you can take a look... 😉

So, to keep it easy (I really am starting to flag), let's keep the 'theme' of artists that influenced me in the 80s going. I was very much into the UK anarcho-punk scene in the early 80s (yes, alongside loving Numan and the burgeoning synthpop/New Romantic shizz as well). Thankfully, there are no pictures (that I know of) of me in skintight jeans, Doc Martens, painted up leather with the punk bands du jour and Donkey Jacket. With really badly spiked up hair and eyeliner.

Most of this revolved around the band Crass and their label. Thinking about it there's possibly things in common with some of Crass's political stances and Roy Harper's. Anyway, given that there's a big stylistic gap between Harper and Numan, let's reach for another jump and go for some prime early 80's UK punk.

Again there's so much to choose from. But let's go with this. It's pretty accessible Crass - they can be a bit more challenging, but I love 'em to bits. I drew that logo everywhere!

So, not much gribblychat on this post - I have been known to wibble on quite a bit, but I'll save that for future posts...

Hope you enjoy the tunes!

Great to have you @gribbles and a great first post for Three Tune Tuesday, if this one is anything to go by, I am going to look forward to your posts.

Roy Harper's tune sounds like two songs wrapped up into one and those high picthed bits are pure unexpected, but they work, they just work. I will be sure to check out some more of his stuff, any particular album you would recommend to start with?

Then you slow it right down for Gary Numan and a great song choice I might add.

But they live quite happily side by side in my record collection. Along with a wide range of other stuff. I like what I like.

Ha ha, I am the exact same, a genre surfer, my tastes are from almost every corner of musical tastes, and sure isn't variety great!

Some nice old 80's UK punk to finish out the trio with Crass, quality stuff - that song is so under rated.

Cheers :)

I missed yesterday - but rest assured there will be more...!

I like the variety, great for an introduction post.
