En el 2006 John Scofield grabó Out Louder como parte de Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood, incorporándose al trío de avant-jazz-funk, con el que ya había tocado en A Go Go (1998). El álbum jazz-funk con elementos de rock es ecléctico y en él encontramos tanto composiciones propias como versiones de canciones de otros artistas, las melodías son fuertes y el grupo muestra una tremenda consistencia. En el 2003 el renombrado batería Jack DeJohnette formó el Trio Beyond para rendir homenaje al trío Lifetime del fallecido pionero del jazz fusión Tony Williams (con Larry Young al Hammond B-3, John McLaughlin a la guitarra y el propio Williams a la batería), y para ello convocó al pianista convertido en organista y pianista eléctrico Larry Goldings, y a Scofield.
In 2006, John Scofield recorded Out Louder as part of Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood, joining the avant-jazz-funk trio, with which he had already played in A Go Go (1998). The jazz-funk album with rock elements is eclectic and contains both their own compositions and covers of other artists’ songs, the melodies are strong and the group shows tremendous consistency. The following year the trio gave a concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall within the London Jazz Festival, which resulted in Saudades (2006), recorded by the ECM label, in which the musicians enjoy playing in an astonishing and impressive way. The Portuguese word “saudade” means sadness, which would be the equivalent of American blues, with each member making an equally important contribution to bringing the whole thing together. The album is a brilliant update of Emergency! (1969) and Turn it Over (1970) by drummer Tony Williams’ Lifetime, but also includes songs by Trio Beyond.

En el 2007 volvió a reunir a su trío preferido con el bajista eléctrico Steve Swallow y el batería Bill Stewart junto a una sección de vientos de cuatro miembros, para la que escribe excelentes arreglos, e introdujo This Meets That para EmArcy Records, que fue bien acogido por la crítica. In it Scofield continues his search for adventures by applying his technique and imaginative thinking to just about anything he chooses, from a classic country hit in a jazz format to a sweet, bluesy take or a forceful soul stomper using brief flashes of heavy-metal insanity, wah-wah madness, demon comping, bent strings and squawks.
