Algunas reinas del pop que personalmente idolatro, tienen a sufrir un bajón de calidad con el paso del tiempo. Es algo que le pasa a muchísimas estrellas, sean del campo que sean. La edad pasa factura, el tiempo en la industria no siempre te vuelve un experto, sino que te desgasta. Hay muchos casos de artistas que hoy día son solo la sombra de la gloria que alguna vez tuvieron. Durante un tiempo, se consideró que MARINA sería parte de esta lista de artistas cuya trayectoria sería resumida a una etapa que ya no volverá. Hace unos días, MARINA lanzó un nuevo disco, las expectativas estaban mezcladas. ¿Volveríamos a escuchar a la MARINA que tanto amamos?

Some pop queens that I personally idolize, tend to suffer a drop in quality as time goes by. It's something that happens to a lot of stars, no matter what field they are in. Age takes its toll, time in the industry doesn't always make you an expert, it wears you down. There are many cases of artists who today are only a shadow of the glory they once had. For a while, it was considered that MARINA would be part of this list of artists whose trajectory would be summarized to a stage that will never return. A few days ago, MARINA released a new album, expectations were mixed. Would we ever hear again the MARINA we loved so much?

Ya he hablado antes de Marina, incluso le dediqué un post entero, pero por si acaso, Marina Diamandis es una artista del Reino Unido, de origen griego, la cual ha estado en los rankings del mundo del pop desde inicios de la década del 2010. Ha logrado conseguir un estatus enorme y convertirse en una genuina popstar, además de ser una de las artistas más influyentes de este género al traer su estilo sarcástico y letras cargadas de ironía y crítica. MARINA es el tipo de artista que va por "etapas", cada álbum para ella ha representado una etapa diferente, y aunque estos comparten su sonido característico, cada cual tiene una estética particular que los hace únicos.

I've talked about Marina before, I even dedicated a whole post to her, but just in case, Marina Diamandis is a UK artist, of Greek origin, who has been in the pop world rankings since the early 2010s. She has managed to achieve huge status and become a genuine popstar, as well as being one of the most influential artists of this genre by bringing her sarcastic style and lyrics loaded with irony and criticism. MARINA is the kind of artist who goes through "stages", each album for her has represented a different stage, and although they share her characteristic sound, each one has a particular aesthetic that makes them unique.

En el caso de Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land, el último disco lanzado por esta artista, la etapa a la que ella se está lanzando es radicalmente diferente en estética a sus etapas anteriores. Más aún tras salir de "Love + Hate", un disco que no fue precisamente bien recibido por mucha de la fanaticada de esta artista. MARINA venía anunciando su regreso desde hace rato y la decepción que muchos tuvieron tras Love + Hate dejó una huella de desesperanza en esta artista. Este nuevo disco se presentaba como algo dudoso, los fans no sabían si creer que este sería un regreso glorioso de esta artista o si continuaría por la misma vía que Love + Hate. Este 11 de Junio, tras el lanzamiento de algunos singles, este derivativo disco sería lanzado. ¿Dio la talla?

In the case of Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land, the latest album released by this artist, the stage to which she is launching herself is radically different in aesthetics to her previous stages. Even more so after the release of "Love + Hate", an album that was not exactly well received by many of her fans. MARINA had been announcing her comeback for a long time and the disappointment that many had after Love + Hate left a mark of despair in this artist. This new album was presented as something doubtful, fans did not know whether to believe that this would be a glorious return of this artist or if it would continue along the same path as Love + Hate. This June 11, after the release of some singles, this derivative album would be released. Did it lived it up to the hype?

Lanzado este 11 de Junio mediante el sello discográfico de Atlantic Records, "Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land" sería lanzado. Un disco cuya naturaleza en general representa el regreso de MARINA. Este disco estuvo siendo pensado y trabajado desde apenas un par de meses tras el lanzamiento de Love + Hate. MARINA comentó que con este nuevo disco, ella se sentía más en control de lo que estaba haciendo, ya que en el disco anterior, dejó que muchas otras personas tomaran parte del proceso artístico del disco, ya que en aquel momento estaba luchando con la depresión y no tenía muchas ganas de desarrollarlo por su cuenta, pero en este disco, MARINA tomó el control de nuevo y una vez más, presenciamos un disco totalmente pensado por ella.

Con la ayuda de sus fans, MARINA tomó parte de muchas influencias para crear este nuevo disco. El proceso creativo fue algo lento para ella, incluso teniendo en cuenta que su gira del 2020 fue cancelada, lo cual le dio mucho más tiempo de trabajar en el disco. No fue si no hasta agosto que el disco terminaría de escribirse y hasta noviembre que un single sería lanzado, siendo este disco "Man's World". Un himno feminista y ambientalista con un tono que baila entre lo épico y lo trágico.

Released this June 11 through the Atlantic Records label, "Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land" would be released. An album whose overall nature represents MARINA's comeback. This album was being thought and worked on since just a couple of months after the release of Love + Hate. MARINA commented that with this new album, she felt more in control of what she was doing, as on the previous album, she let many other people take part of the artistic process of the album, as at that time she was struggling with depression and didn't feel like developing it on her own, but on this album, MARINA took control again and once again, we witnessed an album totally thought by her.

With the help of her fans, MARINA took part of many influences to create this new album. The creative process was somewhat slow for her, even considering that her 2020 tour was cancelled, which gave her much more time to work on the album. It wasn't until August that the album would be finished being written and November that a single would be released, this album being "Man's World". A feminist and environmentalist anthem with a tone that dances between the epic and the tragic.

Esta canción, la cual por cierto es mi favorita del disco, bebe del pop rock que solía formar parte del estilo de Marina en su primer disco: "The Family Jewels", pero el tono trágico de la canción y la voz lenta de MARINA en el coro, crea una versión más severa de este sonido. Los mensajes ambientalistas y críticos no se quedarían en Man's World, regresarían el 14 de abril del siguiente año (sí, pasó bastante tiempo hasta que saliera el segundo single) con "Purge The Poison". Siendo esta vez una canción que no solo critica a la falta de conciencia ecológica, sino que también ataca a las corrientes políticas que han llevado al detrimento del planeta. Esta vez con un sonido más animado y llamando a la acción.

This song, which by the way is my favorite of the album, is influenced by the pop rock that used to be part of Marina's style in her first album: "The Family Jewels", but the tragic tone of the song and MARINA's slow voice in the chorus, creates a more severe version of this sound. The environmentalist and critical messages would not stay in Man's World, they would return on April 14th of the following year (yes, it took a long time for the second single to be released) with "Purge The Poison". This time being a song that not only criticizes the lack of ecological conscience, but also attacks the political currents that have led to the detriment of the planet. This time with a livelier sound and calling for action.

Cuando por fin el disco fue lanzado, tardé unos días en tomar la decisión de escucharlo. La primera vez, admito que no me pareció gran cosa, aunque fue decentemente disfrutable. Ya voy por la sexta escuchada y definitivamente es un álbum que echa raíces dentro de ti. Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land es definitivamente el regreso de la Marina que conocemos. Tal vez con un poco de su esencia algo apagada, pero ella está más que motivada para regresar con toda su gloria y este disco podría ser el inicio de una nueva etapa donde recuperará su brillo por completo. El disco entra bastante dentro de su tipo de pop representativo, no falta una que otra balada de piano, porque la melancolía no puede faltar en los álbumes de Marina. Y Luego hay canciones como "Venus Fly Trap" que son de las más activas, haciendo uso de beats saturados y recursos de pop rock para beber lo más posible de "The Family Jewels".

When the album was finally released, it took me a few days to make the decision to listen to it. The first time, I admit I didn't think much of it, although it was decently enjoyable. I'm now on my sixth listen and it's definitely an album that takes root inside you. Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land is definitely the return of the Navy we know. Maybe with a bit of her essence a bit off, but she is more than motivated to come back in all her glory and this album could be the beginning of a new stage where she will regain her shine completely. The album is pretty much within her type of representative pop, there is no lack of piano ballads, because melancholy can't be missing in Marina's albums. And then there are songs like "Venus Fly Trap" that are among the most active, making use of saturated beats and pop rock resources to drink as much as possible from "The Family Jewels".

Este disco se siente como una especie de homenaje a la discografía de MARINA. Tal vez como una especie de despedida, MARINA está saliendo de su crisálida. En varios puntos de este álbum, podemos encontrar muchas referencias a sus viejas etapas, en varias ocasiones el sonido del álbum hace referencias, especialmente al álbum "FROOT". Aunque este disco claramente tenga la magia característica de MARINA, aún considero que ella no ha salido del todo de su letargo artístico. Aún está un poco opacada por su tropiezo con Love + Hate y le falta algo de energía para despegar. Sin embargo, tras la fuerza que presentó este álbum, se nota que MARINA no ha perdido su luz y que ahora es que tiene fuerzas para brillar. Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land es bastante disfrutable y no es para nada un mal disco, tampoco es increíble, pero definitivamente, es el regreso de una estrella.

This album feels like a kind of homage to MARINA's discography. Perhaps as a kind of farewell, MARINA is coming out of its chrysalis. At various points in this album, we can find many references to her old stages, on several occasions the sound of the album makes references, especially to the album "FROOT". Although this album clearly has MARINA's characteristic magic, I still consider that she has not fully emerged from her artistic lethargy. She is still a bit overshadowed by her stumble with Love + Hate and lacks some energy to take off. However, after the strength of this album, it is clear that MARINA has not lost her light and now she has the strength to shine. Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land is quite enjoyable and it's not a bad album at all, it's not amazing either, but it's definitely the return of a star.
