Siguiendo en la misma naturaleza que un viejo post recomendando tres artistas latinoamericanas alternativas, hoy quiero hacer algo similar pero centrándonos en el mundo del hip hop. Aunque pueda tomarse como algo sexista, yo me he puesto a estudiar mis gustos y me he dado cuenta que entre mis artistas favoritos hay más mujeres que hombres. Así que me gustaría continuar haciendo esta clase de posts y dándoles más voz a estas artistas que tanto me gustan y que están llevando su música al tope, destronando a los más grandes. Hoy quiero hablar de tres raperas que me fascinan y están rompiendo la escena.
Continuing in the same vein as an old post recommending three alternative Latin American artists, today I want to do something similar but focusing on the hip hop world. Although it may be taken as something sexist, I've been studying my tastes and I've realized that among my favorite artists there are more women than men. So I would like to continue doing this kind of posts and giving more voice to these artists that I like so much and that are taking their music to the top, dethroning the greatest. Today I want to talk about three female rappers that fascinate me and are breaking the scene.
Tierra Whack
Directamente desde Philadelphia, comenzamos con una de las raperas con más personalidad que han entrado en la escena en los últimos años. Una rapera con un talento y creatividad increíbles, originalmente se hacía llamar "Dizzle Dizz", pero en 2017 cambió a su nombre real. Tierra recorrió un camino difícil y pasó de una vida humilde y complicada, en la que luchaba constantemente con la depresión, al estatus que tiene actualmente. Desde siempre tenía afición por el rap, en su escuela llegó a interpretar un verso de rap en una presentación escolar, posteriormente estuvo cerca de algunos colectivos de batallas de rap e improvisación en Philadelphia, pero no le gustó como funcionaba esta movida así que comenzó a trabajar en un autolavado para reunir dinero para comprar una laptop y así comenzar a producir su propia música.
Dando un salto en el tiempo, Tierra Whack lograría hacer las conexiones necesarias y llegaría a su debut con un interesantísimo disco: "Whack World". Un álbum conceptual de 15 minutos donde cada canción dura un minuto exacto. El álbum vendría acompañado de un vídeo musical para cada uno que posteriormente se uniría para formar un cortometraje completo para todo el disco.
Straight from Philadelphia, we start with one of the most personality driven rappers to enter the scene in recent years. A rapper with incredible talent and creativity, she originally went by the name "Dizzle Dizz", but in 2017 she changed to her real name. Tierra Whack traveled a difficult road and went from a humble and complicated life, where she constantly struggled with depression, to the status she has today. He always had a penchant for rap, in his school he got to perform a rap verse in a school performance, later he was close to some rap and improv battle collectives in Philadelphia, but he didn't like how this move worked so he started working in a car wash to raise money to buy a laptop to start producing his own music.
Taking a leap in time, Tierra Whack would manage to make the necessary connections and would arrive at his debut with a very interesting album: "Whack World". A 15-minute concept album where each song lasts exactly one minute. The album would be accompanied by a music video for each one that would later be joined together to form a complete short film for the whole album.
Tierra Whack se caracteriza por tener un estilo increíble, difícilmente conseguirás a alguien con la misma personalidad que Tierra. Su estilo al rapear puede incluso sonar un poco extraño, pero tiene un encanto enorme. La principal razón por la que Tierra logra romper tantos esquemas, es porque no le teme a atreverse a hacer cosas diferentes. Tan pronto como en el inicio de su carrera, lanzó una canción llamada "Mumbo Jumbo", la cual es una canción que, intencionalmente, tiene una letra ininteligible. Esto para algunos podrá resultar extraño, pero personalmente, considero que es una canción increíble y Tierra tiene muchas cosas que ofrecerle al mundo del hip hop, cosas que tal vez la escena no esté preparada para digerir.
Tierra Whack is characterized for having an incredible style, you will hardly get someone with the same personality as Tierra. His rapping style may even sound a little strange, but it has a huge charm. The main reason why Tierra manages to break so many schemes is because he is not afraid to dare to do different things. As early as the beginning of her career, she released a song called "Mumbo Jumbo", which is a song that intentionally has unintelligible lyrics. This may seem strange to some, but personally, I think it's an amazing song and Tierra has a lot to offer the hip hop world, things that the scene may not be ready to digest.
Little Simz
Probablemente la rapera con más flow y fuerza en sus versos de esta lista, Little Simz es una rapera de Inglaterra, de ascendencia nigeriana, quien originalmente trabajó como actriz en algunos shows. Posteriormente, aparecería en el mundo de la música aproximadamente por el 2013, año en el que lanzaría su primer single. Su debut no llegaría si no hasta 2015, sin embargo, se mantuvo por debajo del radar. Su salto a la fama llegó en el 2019 con su álbum "Grey Area".
Little Simz define su estilo como "experimental", sin embargo, Little Simz no escapa del del espectro del hardcore hip hop y de vez en cuando, incluye algunos recursos del soul y el r&b. Sin embargo, las canciones más características de esta artista, residen en aquellas que van al hip hop más agresivo e intenso. Algunas de sus canciones más reconocidas, son aquellas donde su interpretación es rápida y feroz, aquellas donde escupe versos con una maestría increíble, como es el caso de "Venom".
Probably the rapper with the most flow and strength in her verses of this list, Little Simz is a rapper from England, of Nigerian descent, who originally worked as an actress in some shows. Later, she would appear in the world of music around 2013, year in which she would release her first single. Her debut would not arrive until 2015, however, she remained under the radar. His leap to fame came in 2019 with his album "Grey Area".
Little Simz defines his style as "experimental", however, Little Simz does not escape from the spectrum of hardcore hip hop and from time to time, he includes some resources of soul and r&b. However, the most characteristic songs of this artist, reside in those that go to the most aggressive and intense hip hop. Some of his most recognized songs are those where his interpretation is fast and fierce, those where he spits verses with an incredible mastery, as is the case of "Venom".
Todas las raperas de esta lista tienen, en cierta medida, experimentación en su música. Pero Little Simz es la que lleva al hardcore hip hop tradicional a su música de una forma que imprime una enorme fuerza, flow y facilidad para deslizarse por el beat dejando versos por todos lados, lo cual no le resta elegancia, ya que cuando quiere, puede tener interpretaciones vocales y un ritmo espectacular para sus dimensiones más cercanas al soul o el r&b. Little Simz es una de las raperas más prometedoras de estos tiempos.
All the female rappers on this list have, to some extent, experimentation in their music. But Little Simz is the one who brings traditional hardcore hip hop to her music in a way that imprints an enormous strength, flow and ease to slide through the beat leaving verses all over the place, which does not detract from her elegance, because when she wants, she can have vocal performances and a spectacular rhythm for her dimensions closer to soul or r&b. Little Simz is one of the most promising female rappers of these times.
Shygirl
Shygirl es, probablemente, mi rapera favorita de esta lista. Originaria de Inglaterra, Blane Muise, mejor conocida por su nombre artístico, es una de las raperas más interesantes de la escena actual, aunque sea un poco menos conocida que el resto, probablemente porque su música es también la más experimental entre las raperas de esta lista.
Originalmente, comenzó en la música estando en la movida del deconstructed club, siendo fundadora del sello "NUXXE" junto con Coucou Chloe y Sega Bodega. Su música estaba muy arraigada a este género, por lo que estaba más centrada en la producción que otra cosa. Con la fuerza y texturas que caracterizan a la amalgama de géneros que componen el deconstructed club, Shygirl no estaba mostrando su verdadero talento como rapera. Esto se mantuvo así durante los primeros años de su carrera, en los que lanzó un EP llamado "Cruel Practice". Posteriormente, lanzaría algunos singles y un EP llamado "ALIAS" donde demostraría todos sus talentos.
Shygirl is probably my favorite rapper on this list. Originally from England, Blane Muise, better known by her stage name, is one of the most interesting rappers of the current scene, even if she is a bit less known than the rest, probably because her music is also the most experimental among the rappers on this list.
Originally, she started in music being in the deconstructed club scene, being founder of the label "NUXXE" together with Coucou Chloe and Sega Bodega. Her music was very rooted in this genre, so she was more focused on production than anything else. With the strength and textures that characterize the amalgamation of genres that make up the deconstructed club, Shygirl was not showcasing her true talent as a rapper. This remained true for the first few years of her career, in which she released an EP called "Cruel Practice". Later on, she would release a few singles and an EP called "ALIAS" where she would showcase all her talents.
Shygirl se caracteriza por rapear con voz baja, con una voz grave, sensual y calmada. Este estilo no resta en lo más mínimo a la fuerza de su interpretación, la cual puede ser increíblemente fluida, como es el caso de su canción "BB" o "FREAK", las cuales contienen partes donde la velocidad y maestría vocal de Shygirl se deja ver claramente. Esto también incluyendo que, al ser cercana a Sega Bodega, el cual es un productor increíble, sus canciones siempre están cargadas de un sonido brutalmente texturizado y con beats increíbles.
Shygirl is characterized by rapping in a low voice, with a deep, sensual and calm voice. This style does not detract in the least from the strength of her performance, which can be incredibly fluid, as is the case with her song "BB" or "FREAK", both of which contain parts where Shygirl's speed and vocal mastery are clearly visible. This also includes that, being close to Sega Bodega, who is an incredible producer, her songs are always loaded with a brutally textured sound and incredible beats.
