En este caso, quiero hablarles sobre el jazz, pero no sobre cualquier tipo de Jazz, ya que este es un género enorme y con una vasta variedad de sonidos, que para muchos pueden ser difíciles de digerir a primera escuchada. Así que quiero recomendarles tres discos de jazz vocal con los que, si quieres adentrarte en este hermoso género, podrás comenzar a escuchar jazz de la forma más cómoda y dulce.
Hey Hivers, how's it going? I took a week off to clear my head and take care of some things I had to take care of. But I'm back, ready to continue giving you the best recommendations I can offer. In this case, I want to talk to you about jazz, but not just any kind of jazz, since this is a huge genre with a vast variety of sounds, which for many may be difficult to digest at first listen. So I want to recommend three vocal jazz albums with which, if you want to get into this beautiful genre, you can start listening to jazz in the most comfortable and sweetest way.
Chet Baker Sings (1954)
De la mano de una leyenda del jazz más clásico y tradicional, "Chet Baker Sings" es el álbum por antonomasia del gran cantante y trompetista Chet Baker, todo un ícono del jazz más clásico de los estados unidos. Este es el álbum que yo suelo recomendar siempre a cualquiera que quiera comenzar con el jazz. Es el balance perfecto entre lo "fácil de escuchar" y tradicional, con los toques que son necesarios para ir introduciendo al escuchante en este género. Muchos de los discos de este estilo de jazz, incluso pertenecen a un sub-género del jazz que literalmente se le llama "Easy Listening" debido a lo amigable de este estilo musical. En el caso de este álbum, tenemos no solo varias canciones que son sumamente amigables, si no también increíbles e inolvidables.
From the hand of a legend of the most classic and traditional jazz, "Chet Baker Sings" is the album par excellence of the great singer and trumpeter Chet Baker, an icon of the most classic jazz in the United States. This is the album that I always recommend to anyone who wants to start with jazz. It is the perfect balance between "easy listening" and traditional, with the touches that are necessary to introduce the listener to this genre. Many of the albums in this style of jazz even belong to a sub-genre of jazz that is literally called "Easy Listening" due to the friendliness of this musical style. In the case of this album, we have not only several songs that are extremely friendly, but also incredible and unforgettable.
Una de las principales cosas que caracterizan a este disco, es el enorme romanticismo y melancolía del cual están cargadas todas sus canciones. Este es un disco sumamente dulce y a la vez triste, la voz de Chet es suave como terciopelo, su forma de vocalizar nunca es escandalosa y siempre es tenue, pero con la proyección suficiente para dejar entrever un enorme sentimiento plasmado en su canto. No solo esto, sino que también los instrumentos, por su lado, hacen un trabajo maravilloso para hacerle compañía a su voz, con melodías inolvidables, ritmos simpáticos y juguetones, trompetas tristes y un bajo que no deja nunca de darle el meneo necesario al ritmo. Definitivamente uno de los discos más amigables, simpáticos y melancólicos para adentrarse en el mundo del jazz.

Wild Is The Wind (1966)
Si vamos a hablar de artistas y álbumes legendarios, pocos se me ocurren que tengan un poder, influencia y fuerza como lo tiene esta increíble obra maestra. De la mano de una diosa absoluta en el mundo del jazz vocal: Nina Simone, cantante, compositora y pianista estadounidense de enorme renombre y una de las principales y más importantes cantantes del género. Nina Simone es una auténtica leyenda, no solo en el mundo del jazz, si no también del Soul, formando parte importantísima de la música afroamericana de estos tiempos. Su voz de contralto increíblemente potente, sus melodías de piano extremadamente melancólicas y sus interpretaciones espectaculares le dieron el nombre que lleva y siempre llevará hasta el fin de los tiempos. Tras varias décadas, Nina Simone sigue siendo tan influyente e importante para el género como lo ha sido siempre y este disco, es el epítome (en mi opinión) de su carrera.
If we are going to talk about legendary artists and albums, few come to mind that have the power, influence and strength of this incredible masterpiece. From the hand of an absolute goddess in the world of vocal jazz: Nina Simone, American singer, composer and pianist of enormous renown and one of the main and most important singers of the genre. Nina Simone is a true legend, not only in the world of jazz, but also in the world of Soul, forming a very important part of the Afro-American music of these times. La mayor parte del Vocal Jazz no escapa a la melancolía. Incluso cuando es un género tan lleno de canciones "estándares" donde existen cientas de versiones de diversos intérpretes. Pero en general, el Jazz tiene una enorme carga hereditaria del Blues, un género naturalmente melancólico. Los temas recurrentes de amor, pérdida y sufrimiento están presentes siempre. Y en el caso de Wild Is The Wind, esta no es la excepción. Lo que hace a este álbum tan legendario es la increíble interpretación que Nina logra darle a su voz, a las melodías. Most of Vocal Jazz does not escape melancholy. Even when it is a genre so full of "standard" songs where there are hundreds of versions by various performers. But in general, Jazz has a huge inheritance from the Blues, a naturally melancholic genre. The recurring themes of love, loss and suffering are always present. And in the case of Wild Is The Wind, this is no exception. What makes this album so legendary is the incredible interpretation that Nina manages to give to her voice, to the melodies. Her voice will resonate deeply and will strike a chord with your heartstrings. Wild Is The Wind is one of the most emotional jazz albums I know and not for nothing is it one of my favorites.
Blossom Dearie (1957)
Hay algo que considero que sucede con el mundo del jazz, no solo del jazz vocal, sino con cualquier otra vertiente de este género. Ese algo es un problema que consiste en que, me parece que la grandísima mayor parte de la atención se la llevan siempre las "leyendas" del género. Es perfectamente entendible y normal que esto pase incluso en cualquier género, pero a mi parecer, en este género es particularmente pronunciado este fenómeno. Todo o casi todo el crédito se lo llevan artistas que podrán ser espectaculares, increíbles y sumamente influyentes, pero opacan figuras que merecen mucha más atención de la que reciben y que recibieron. Este es el caso de Blossom Dearie, una cantante y pianista estadounidense espectacular.
There is something that I think is wrong with the world of jazz, not just vocal jazz, but any other aspect of the genre. El jazz vocal suele tener una dualidad que está presente constantemente, esa dualidad, es que este tipo de música suele tener un sonido alegre, simpático y bailable o todo lo contrario, un sonido melancólico y lento. En el caso de Blossom, ella decide irse por el lado más juguetón del vocal jazz. Este álbum no es la quinta maravilla del género, pero es el balance perfecto de todo lo que necesitas en un disco de jazz para alguien que comienza en el género. Está lleno de canciones estándares con melodías inolvidables, interpretaciones geniales y sumamente dulces. Blossom no tiene nada que envidiarle a los grandes del género, ella logra con este disco encapsular todo lo que hace genial y atractivo al Vocal Jazz. Por ello, no me canso de recomendarlo.
Vocal jazz usually has a duality that is constantly present, that duality is that this type of music usually has a cheerful, friendly and danceable sound or the opposite, a melancholic and slow sound. This album is not the fifth wonder of the genre, but it is the perfect balance of everything you need in a jazz album for someone starting out in the genre. It's full of standard songs with haunting melodies, cool performances and supremely sweet playing. Blossom has nothing to envy from the greats of the genre, she manages with this album to encapsulate everything that makes Vocal Jazz great and appealing. That's why I can't recommend it enough.
