A veces evocamos canciones que nacen directamente desde el corazón, como reclamando por aquellos momentos en los que la tertulia perfecta era entre la música y tú. A veces cantamos por la alegría de un presente que no deseamos que se vaya, y en otras ocasiones lo hacemos en honor a ese pasado que con nostalgia rehúsa decir adiós. Y es que gracias a la música podemos hacer esa conexión a través del tiempo que vivimos o hemos vivido, a fin de poder siempre encontrar ese impulso necesario que un buen tema musical nos puede dar.

Sometimes we evoke songs that are born directly from the heart, as if claiming for those moments when the perfect get-together was between you and the music. Sometimes we sing for the joy of a present that we do not want to leave, and sometimes we sing in honor of that past that nostalgically refuses to say goodbye. And it is thanks to music that we can make that connection through the time we live or have lived, in order to always be able to find that necessary impulse that a good musical theme can give us.

En esta ocasión decido escribir por ese primer amor que tuve con la música, y como fue que un simple niño cayó en las redes de una musa que, si se pudiera ilustrar, sería como esos sueños inocentes en los que un niño se enamora de su maestra, o como cuando te desvives por una cantante que sencillamente te ha cautivado con la conexión perfecta entre su voz y su belleza. Por eso hoy a través de estas palabras, decido evocar esa pasión que desde niño pude tener hacia un género de música que desde siempre ha estado presente en mí, de forma especial y a través de grupos musicales como el cual voy a citar en este día.

Se trata del grupo “Los terrícolas”, un grupo musical que se ha convertido en una especie de viajero musical pues desde muy pequeño los empecé a escuchar. Cuando yo tan solo tenía seis años, ya era un niño que sabía que cada sábado por la noche en mi casa esa sería la música que sonaría a todo volumen. Mi tío Teodoro, uno de esos padres que más quiero y extraño, solía escuchar estas hermosas melodías que para un niño como yo resultaron muy atrayentes desde el primer momento, y por lo cual a muchos les causaba curiosidad el ver mi gusto y mi interés por esta clase de música. No era que no me gustaban las canciones de mi tiempo, simplemente era algo más especial lo que sentía con los temas de este grupo.

On this occasion I decide to write about that first love I had with music, and how it was that a simple child fell into the nets of a muse that, if it could be illustrated, would be like those innocent dreams in which a child falls in love with his teacher, or like when you fall in love with a singer who has simply captivated you with the perfect connection between her voice and her beauty. That is why today through these words, I decide to evoke that passion that since I was a child I could have towards a genre of music that has always been present in me, in a special way and through musical groups such as the one I am going to mention today.

This is the group "Los Terrícolas", a musical group that has become a kind of musical traveler because since I was very young I started listening to them. When I was only six years old, I was already a child who knew that every Saturday night in my house this would be the music that would be played at full volume. My uncle Teodoro, one of those fathers that I love and miss the most, used to listen to these beautiful melodies that for a child like me were very attractive from the first moment, and for which many were curious to see my taste and my interest for this kind of music. It wasn't that I didn't like the songs of my time, it was just something more special that I felt with the songs of this group.

Algo que ahora como adulto me pregunto es sobre la razón para que yo pudiera sentir esa dulce atracción por esta clase de canciones que muchos catalogaban como tristes, llenas de sentimientos o con aires de despecho. Incluso como niño algunos familiares a modo de broma me preguntaban “¿Acaso estás despechado?” “¿Tu novia te dejó?”, esto con el fin de saber la razón por la que a mí me gustaban tanto estas canciones. Admito que para ese entonces no comprendía la verdadera esencia de la letra en cada canción, pero la melodía y la voz de los intérpretes tenían esa combinación perfecta que de seguro todos deseamos sentir al escuchar una canción.

Ya como adolescente no era necesario esperar hasta el sábado para escuchar estas canciones, y para ese tiempo yo ya tenía un CD con muchos temas de los terrícolas. Recuerdo que todos los viernes cada miembro de la familia salía de casa, cada quien a sus diligencias personales, mientras que una prima mía y yo nos quedábamos en casa para escuchar a todo volumen las canciones de los terrícolas. Recuerdo que íbamos a la bodega a comprar algo para comer y beber, y así nos quedábamos en casa como un par de viejos reflexionando y cantando al ritmo de canciones como “Hoy te confieso “, “Nuestra historia”, “Te juro que te amo “.

Something that now as an adult I wonder about is the reason why I could feel that sweet attraction for this kind of songs that many categorized as sad, full of feelings or with airs of spite. Even as a child, some of my family members jokingly asked me "Are you scorned?" "Did your girlfriend leave you?", in order to know the reason why I liked these songs so much. I admit that back then I didn't understand the true essence of the lyrics in each song, but the melody and the voice of the performers had that perfect combination that we all surely want to feel when listening to a song.

As a teenager it wasn't necessary to wait until Saturday to listen to these songs, and by that time I already had a CD with many of the Earthlings' songs. I remember that every Friday each member of the family would leave the house, each one to their personal errands, while a cousin of mine and I would stay at home to listen to the songs of the Earthlings at full volume. I remember we would go to the bodega to buy something to eat and drink, and so we would stay at home like a couple of old men reflecting and singing to the rhythm of songs like "Hoy te confieso ", "Nuestra historia", "Te juro que te amo ".

Una buena canción siempre debe empezar con alguna melodía o algunas palabras que preparen la mente y el corazón, y por eso debo decir que algo que me gusta de este grupo es la introducción de algunas de sus canciones, partes en las que la chica y el chico interactúan en una especie de conversación o reflexión que luego da paso al desarrollo de la canción. Una de las que más disfrutábamos era la del tema “Luto en mi alma”, y es que con esa canción si le poníamos interés a la letra de la canción, lo cual nos llevaba a discutir entre la tontedad del hombre y la traición de la mujer. Obviamente mi prima defendía una parte y yo la otra, pero al final todo terminaba en que los dos cantamos la canción con mucho sentimiento.

Hay que reconocer que básicamente las canciones de los terrícolas apuntan hacia dos nortes: el amor y el desamor. Pero de manera magistral hacen que del amor nos llegamos a enamorar más, y del desamor nos apegamos a un sentimiento que yace herido por la pérdida del mismo. “ Te amaré”, “Vivirás”, “Cuesta abajo “, son canciones con las que fácilmente te puedes detener y pensar en alguna experiencia que has tenido, o quizás un presente que ahora estás viviendo, y es allí donde las emociones y los sentimientos más profundos utilizan el lenguaje musical ideal que provoca en nosotros una bonita percepción entre la música y el amor.

A good song should always start with some melody or some words that prepare the mind and heart, and that's why I must say that something I like about this group is the introduction of some of their songs, parts in which the girl and the boy interact in a kind of conversation or reflection that then gives way to the development of the song. One of the ones we enjoyed the most was the song "Luto en mi alma" (Mourning in my soul), and with that song we were interested in the lyrics of the song, which led us to discuss between the foolishness of the man and the betrayal of the woman. Obviously my cousin defended one side and I defended the other, but in the end it all ended up that we both sang the song with a lot of feeling.

It must be recognized that basically the songs of the earthlings point towards two nortes: love and heartbreak. But in a masterful way they make us fall more in love with love, and with the lack of love we become attached to a feeling that lies wounded by the loss of it. "Te amaré", "Vivirás", "Cuesta abajo", are songs with which you can easily stop and think about some experience you have had, or perhaps a present you are now living, and it is there where the emotions and the deepest feelings use the ideal musical language that provokes in us a beautiful perception between music and love.

La peculiaridad con este grupo es muy especial, y es que cuando compré mi primer CD de ellos, solo traía doce canciones, y las doce eran igualmente buenas, no había desperdicio en ninguna de ellas. En el caso de mi tío, su canción favorita era “Volverás”, mientras que la de mi prima es “Amor traicionero”. Cómo lo mencioné un poco antes, me gusta mucho la manera en como empiezan ciertos temas, así que no puedo dejar de mencionar temas como “La carta” y “Dos cosas”. Si eres uno de esos lectores que hasta ahora ha llegado hasta aquí, me gustaría mucho saber si también es de tu agrado este grupo musical y cual de todos sus temas te gusta más.

Al escuchar canciones de los terrícolas, todavía muchas personas me preguntan si estoy despechado, si es porque mi novia me abandonó o porque sencillamente soy un viejo, pero no hago caso a eso, pues son las mismas cosas que escuché cuando tan solo era un niño a quien le gustaba escuchar a los terrícolas. Desde mi reflexión y en pocas palabras, son canciones que dibujan lo que los sentimientos no pueden gritar, y más allá de una hermosa melodía y una simple letra, se encuentran canciones que marcan de forma especial nuestra existencia.

The peculiarity with this group is very special, and is that when I bought my first CD of them, it only had twelve songs, and all twelve were equally good, there was no waste in any of them. In my uncle's case, his favorite song was "Volverás", while my cousin's was "Amor traicionero". As I mentioned a little earlier, I really like the way certain songs start, so I can't help but mention songs like "La carta" and "Dos cosas". From my reflection and in a few words, they are songs that draw what feelings cannot shout, and beyond a beautiful melody and simple lyrics, there are songs that mark our existence in a special way.
