The cold bit my cheeks like a shy dog, but it did not feel cruel. It was a winter morning below five degrees, yet the air stayed still and soft. I finally took my bike for a Sunday ride to Volkspark Jungfernheide to go for a long interval walk there. The city felt muted, like someone had turned the volume knob down. Hardly anyone crossed my path. On the way, I passed two foxes slipping through shadows, a mouse darting like a dropped coin, and several rabbits frozen in alert poses. Inside the park, the familiar cast appeared again, swans drifting like porcelain boats, gray herons standing stiff as statues, coots and ducks scribbling ripples on the water. I slowed down on the island for breathing and meditation by the shore. There I noticed the bold marks of a beaver, teeth written into wood, proof of night work I shot and brought back for you to see. It was too dark for animal photos, but not too dark to remember.
Die Kälte kniff mir in die Wangen wie ein scheuer Hund, doch sie fühlte sich nicht hart an. Es war ein Wintermorgen unter fünf Grad, aber die Luft blieb ruhig und weich. Ich fuhr endlich mal wieder mit dem Rad die sonntägliche tour zum Volkspark Jungfernheide um dort eine grosse Runde intervall-walking zu machen. Die Stadt wirkte gedämpft, als hätte jemand den Lautstärkeregler runtergedreht. Kaum jemand kam mir entgegen. Auf dem Hinweg sah ich zwei Füchse im Schatten, eine Maus wegflitzen wie eine fallende Münze und mehrere Kaninchen in gespannter Starre. Im Park tauchten die bekannten Figuren wieder auf, Schwäne wie Porzellanboote, Graureiher wie Statuen, Blesshühner und Enten, die Kreise ins Wasser schrieben. Auf der Insel hielt ich an für Atem und Meditation am Ufer. Dort entdeckte ich die deutlichen Spuren eines Bibers, Zähne als Schrift im Holz, Nachtarbeit, von der ich euch ein paar Fotos mitgebracht habe. Für Tierfotos war es zu dunkel, aber nicht für Erinnerungen.
