I was having an hour mooching around Nathorn the other day, whilst the wife was having a massage, when I was saw one of the bigger fishing boats dock at the end of the pier.
We have these larger boats thatbseem to dissappear off for days at a time, as well as the smaller long-tailed boats that just do a few hours in the bay beach night.
A lot of the smaller boats' catch is sold directly on the sea front and you can be assured it's very fresh but the catch from the big boats?
As you can see, they had quite a catch and as quickly as one box was sorted and brought up on deck, a bloke appeared from a deck hatch and threw another crate at the guys who were sorting.
One thing I never saw, though, was ice. Sure, they were constantly hosing the fish down but I've no idea how long ago they were caught. None of them were still wiggling around!
What a mixed catch they had. As well as dish, I saw squid and crabs. Squid is one of the mostbpopular and commonly eaten foods on Samui, most are locally caught, but immguessing these fishing boats trawl the seabed. Goodness knows what damage that causes to the ecosystem.
The other thing that sprang to mind was how small they all were. This is just one boat of probably a few dozen based on the island. How the hell does nature sustain all this harvesting?
I suppose it's possible that these small fry get sold to pet food producers as I don't remember ever seeing them eaten so small. The market for fish sauce must also be lucrative considering how many bottles of that awful stuff Thais squirt on their food and use in cooking.
Of course, as well as feeling sorry for nature and the fish, and pondering the economics of the industry, you have to feel for the guys who live and work on these rickety old crates. As well as looking like a not too well paid line of work, they must constantly stink of bloody fish!

Damn that shot of the boats with the sunset behind looks gorgeous. I assume they have some regulations (or moral stuff) that they need to let go of the tiny fishes and only catch the big ones so they have a chance to replicate? I don't know, hopefully they catch ethically, as they are the ones who's gonna suffer anyway. XD
Thank you. Its easy to get great sunset shots here, even for someone as un-artistic as me, as I live on the west coast of the island and its only a couple of Km to the sea. The weather has also improved now with clear old nights and cloudless days so on Monday, we had a beauty!
As for the fish, I have a sneaky suspicion they don't give a damn!
